i sure HOPE they have a set-up switch which allows _me_ to have multiple
windows, just like i had in the Corel products in Win3.11 and OS/2..

a single pane is a GIANT step backwards!! (for me)

of course they do. you can switch back and forth between single- and the
    'traditional' multi-window mode.

Try Photoshop Elements, download a trial copy. Elements works here every day and costs about $79.00 at some stores. Nothing is free, computer parts are not free, along with puppys and kittens, horses and my copy of CS5.

well, some things are, like opensource programs. takes lots of time &
energy to create them, but using them _is_ free. that's why it's not nice
to call them "useless" or "unusable" because they're not exactly what one
personally would like -- while others find them very much usable, better
even than "cheap" stuff for U$ 79 or 1k+.

I guess because I started using GIMP so long ago, before the heavy influx of
'converts' that it never really occurred to me that GIMP should act or
behave like some commercial app. It was just GIMP, and GIMP was GIMP. I
learned how to use it and that was that. Is is quirky, sure but once you
learn it it makes perfet sense. If you don't like GIMP, use something else,
there are a lot of different apps to choose from and each have their own
strengths. Try inkscape if you want to do some quick and dirty, drawing.
