Thread: Kde help centre failures to build search indexes

Thumbs down Kde help centre failures to build search indexes

I seem to have alot of help entries from thumbing through the contents of the kde help centre. However, when I try to search I only get a few results in the 'Application Manuals'>'KDE application manuals' and 'Linux Documentation'>'Manpages' sections and many sections are empty. So I clicked the 'Build Search Index' button at the bottom and this tells me the indexes are all missing so I click 'build index'.This fails in all sections.
The index folder it is trying to use is:"/home/me/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index/" which I think is wrong.
This is a default install of KDE 3.5.9 rel. 49.1.
Showing details lists each error as similar to:
    "INDEXDIR: /home/me/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index/
    Creating index for 'book_opensuse_referenceen'
    htdig failed"
I thought the create index needed a better location as I cannot see any config files is my home dir so I pointed it at "/usr/share/kde4/apps/khelpcenter" but I got the results!
    Any ideas are helpful.
As a novice it is strange that indexes are not built at install I remember something similar happening in Windows .hlp files..

I had exact problem until this: You need to install the rpm package htdig. Then run the indexer and note all the specific failures you get. You'll see kwywords on those. Then install those "doc" files via searching in Yast --> software --> software management --> search box + keywords.

I've installed htdig some time ago, and built the indexes.
On rebuilding the indexes I get messages like these (the last two groups):

    Code:

The missing files are always the same, for instance:

    http://localhost/usr/share/doc/manua...06ch33s02.html

    But this file exists as:

    /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/bk04pt06ch33s02.html

It is part of the opensuse-manual_en package installed from the OpenSUSE 11.0 DVD.

Search works, after a fashion, but the results are repeated. For example, if I search for NFS I get this for all headings under STARTUP, REFERENCE and OPENSUSE DOCUMENTATION:

    Code:
21.4. Exporting File Systems with YaST (06/06/08)
Chapter 21. Sharing File Systems with NFS (06/06/08)
    8.12. Important Linux Commands (06/06/08)
21.2. Importing File Systems with YaST (06/06/08)
    21.6. NFS with Kerberos (06/06/08)
1.2. Setting Up the Server Holding the Installation Sources (06/06/08)
11.6. Sharing Files between Linux Computers (06/06/08)
    1.10. Suggested Partitioning (06/06/08)
    1.5. The Boot Screen (06/06/08)
21.3. Importing File Systems Manually (06/06/08)
I also get nothing under KDE3 USER GUIDE and different results under MANPAGE.

At the bottom of the search results page there is this:

    Code:
    OPENSUSE DOCUMENTATION (english)
     Htdig error:
Unable to read word database file '/home/user_name/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index//opensuse-manualen.words.db'
    Did you run htdig?
htdig is installed. I'm pretty sure the indexer run it, but I also run it as root without parameters (# htdig), no messages.

I understand that as it is the search utility is not fully working. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Dear swerdna, dear community,
thanks a lot for the hint to install htdig.
I faced exactly the same problem when trying to build a search index for KDE-Help. No links were created, just useless text. After htdig-installation with yast2 the problem was solved.
