Thread: Wireless internet connection not working vista/opensuse

Question Wireless internet connection not working vista/opensuse

Hi everyone. I'm new to openSUSE and I just got it to dual boot on my comp with Vista...(yay!)

The only problem is that I cannot connect to the internet. I looked through a couple of other forum topics in which I was instructed to run iwconfig, iwlist, and ifconfig. I could not run ifconfig for some reason.

The results of iwconfig were this:

    l0 No Wireless Extensions
    eth0 No Wireless Extensions
    wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions

    wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:""
    mode=managed channel:0 access point:invalid
(I'll have to right down the rest here...)

What's going on? eth0 and wlan0 are both recognized by the Network Manager...but i can't connect to the internet. I also went through YaST and it said that my wireless card was not connected. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Haha...yeah that sticky helped a whole lot
    but...

I did what they said and got the firmware to get everything working but the problem is that I can't compile the makefile for some reason. When I try to run make in the konsole it just tells me the command isn't recognized or something. Do you know what's wrong???

ensure you have kernel sources,gcc/gcc++ & make installed before compiling. all can be found on your install media

Thanks! I was well on my way to getting everything set up except I found two more problems...

    libmudflap0
    libmudflapth0

The only one I could find was libmudflap0...and the gcc43 rpm needs them both in order to install. I thought I found the two files before and I installed them (libmudflap and libmudflapth)but the same error came up. I did find libmudflap0 but since I installed libmudflap it wouldn't let me install libmudflap0. Do you know what I should do next? I've gotten make and the linux kernel all installed...I just need to get gcc up and running.

And sorry about all the questions...and I really appreciate your help.

p.s. Did you mean I should just re-install openSUSE?

no, no need to re-install. you should be able to get gcc/gcc++ & all it's dependencies via YaST. If you select patterns from the top-left drop-down menu, then, scroll down to development & select Base Development & c/c++ development & Linux Kernel Development, that should sort you out

I'm sorry but I can't find the "Patterns" menu anywhere! I looked in YaST and any place I could think of but I could not find what you were talking about. I looked up Patterns on the web site and the last listing it has was on 10.2, does it go by another name now. Please step me through this...

    Does it go like this?

    1. Load up openSUSE from hd (not cd)
    2. Put in Live CD
    3. Open YaST
    4. Look for Patterns (or whatever it goes by now)
    5. Find files on CD
    6. Install files
    7. Reboot

Is this right? I just can't find that darn "Patterns" thing.

    1 ) start p.c. & boot to openSUSE
    2 ) open YaST
3 ) click on software management
    4 ) click on the top-left drop-down menu
5 ) click on patterns as per screen-shot

I uploaded a screen shot of YaST to show you I really don't have that Patterns dialog. Is there another way to access it? And if not...how would I go about getting the files?

(Hopefully I don't sound rude...I'm just kind of frustrated...)

I see the word Patterns in that screen-shot. You don't?
