    Default MFC8500 drivers installation

    I'm trying to install drivers for Brother MFC8500 on an openSUSE 11, I got the 2 RPM files from the support web site. mfc8500lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.rpm and cupswrapperMFC8500-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm.

    cupswrapperMFC8500-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm will not install, it wants lpr, mfc8500lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.rpm will not install, it breaks because it lacks access to .gvfs

    Any ideas? Thanks, David L.

    welcome to Suse forums, DavidLen;

    greenmachine has given all the information hopefully to get you up and running

    the Brother website advises to install the lpr before the cups, as you set out to do; interesting to hear it will not install the cups if the lpr is not already installed;

    Brother also advise a preinstall step before the lpr driver is installed; it is prerequired procedure no3 on this page;

    Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions

    ubuntu needs more steps; rpm only needs this single one:

    Creating a symbolic link is required before the installation
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/cups /etc/init.d/lpd
    don't know if it is crucial; brother advise it

    looks like you need the brscan driver for the scanner section of your MFC-8500 Brother printer on OpenSuse installation; are you 32 bit of 64bit?

    interested to hear how all the functions go

    all best wishes
