Thread: Video editing software??

  1. #1

    Default Video editing software??

    Looking for a decent video editing software. I used to use cyberlink power director in windows and it worked great for me. Any video editing software for linux that stands out?

    There is Kino, Kdenlive, Cinelerra, or Open Movie Editor that I can
    think of.

    Are all of these pretty much on par, or would you reccomend one over the other?

    yes; there are linux video editing programmes; none are perfect; one probably needs persistence, and application to really get them going;

    and each programme tends to do one function; kino is great for pulling miniDV out of a camera; kdenlive will do that that but does some simple editing;

    if I post a link for a recent discussion on one of the linux video editors: kdenlive

    kdenlive - openSUSE Forums

    on page 2, you will see oldcpu saying

    Now IMHO if you find a package Windows based, Mac Based, or Linux based, that gives you the stability you want, then use it. Be practical, and don't let a preference for an OS sway your practicality.
    the original poster complained of kdenlive crashing; oldcpu firstly commented

    I know a number of Mac users, and MS-Windows users (and even more Linux users) who use video editing software other than kdenlive.

    All of them complain about the number of crashes. NOT ONE of them will state they have never had a crash, especially when their project starts getting bigger.

    With my having tried more than a half-dozen different Linux packages, IMHO kdenlive is more stable than the other Linux apps. And with my having compared notes with my friends who use Mac and Windows video editors, kdenlive has similar behaviour wrt stability.
    any and all of these programmes will require the user to work at using them; we were fortunate to buy MainActor, for linux, and it has been very good, and worked very well; sadly, is no longer sold; our version still does well;

    so; I suspect those who use one video-editing programme regularly may get good at that programme; I think cinelerra has recently been revamped; and from each programme,check it out too; it was in the past felt to be more capable, but difficult to understand I thought;

    for each programme, there is likely to be its own forum; users would be well advised surely to join one of those specialist forums; ask; contribute; we joined kdenlive forum when we had a look at kdenlive;

    hmmmmmmmmm. here is quote I just saw from oldcpu

    I've wasted far too much time on Cinelerra and never produced anything of value with it, so I avoid it like the plague. Its user interface is simply too obscure for me.

    Is there any working video editing software for 11.1??

    OpenMovieEditor: can't start it, crashes with segment fault.
    Kdenlive: can't start it, crashes with segment fault.
    Cinelerra: not available for 11.1, only for 11.0

    This is ridiculous... I'm running into more and more areas where 11.1 is useless/not working while 11.0 worked great, I'm starting to beleive 11.1 is fubar.

    That's a problem with xmass releases, everybody's on holiday and don't really care for bugfixes or building packages for 11.1

    I personally miss GNOMEsubtitle editor, onece available through old Guru repository, but not anymore and alternatives are none Or full subpixel hinting in GNOME...

    btw. what about avidemux-svn from packman? What specific feature for video editing is that you want? Some basic thing also can do MKV toolnix. I use it often for merging/splitting or re-muxing MKV files..

    on openSUSE-11.1, kdenlive crashes on KDE-3.5.10, but works on KDE-4.1.3.

    on openSUSE-10.3, kdenlive works on KDE-3.5.7.

    I have not tried kdenlive on openSUSE-11.0 with KDE-3.5.9.

    If any of them crash on you, simply send an email to the packager and ask that they look into it. Include in the email the version number of the rpm that you have installed, and if you know of the dependencies, also list their version numbers as well. As best possible quote the error message you get.

    I find the Packman packagers are very helpful in resolving any such problems.
