Default Cannot use the Workgroup xxxx for linux authentication

I was very excited at my first opportunity to install the new version 11 of OpenSuse. I had done a few installs with 10.3 and been playing around with getting all the office apps replaced with Linux versions. I even figured out how to install Wine and get a couple of old apps that we need to run. But the same problem that I had with 10.3 installs is still there with version 11.

During installation I choose a Windows WorkGroups as my login type. I have an OpenSuse server running Samba which is configured as the PDC and Master DC. All workstations authenticate to that server and it works great! But for whatever reason, anytime I try "installing" with this type of configuration, the install never likes my domain name.

There are a few windows machines with different workgroup names, but most all workstations are configured to login to the samba server under a single domain name. No matter what name I type in for the workgroup it errors with "Cannot use the Workgroup "xxxx" for linux authentication."

If I back up and do a stand alone install and then later go in and change the login type to be windows domain it will work as it should. So there is something hinkey about how the install is looking for Windows Domains / WorkGroups, in that it's not recognizing the Samba Server WorkGroup.

Am I misunderstanding or doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated. If need be, I can provide my samba servers' config, but since there are many win2k, winXP, and opensuse workstations successfully authenticating to it already I doubt that I have something configured wrong on it.

    Linux is case sensitive.
If your actual work group is Workgroup and if you trying to add your client to workgroup then it'll throw that error you mentioned in your post. [ Yes it's case sensitive for upper & lower case also ]

    Hi!

It's kind of a very old blog, but just in case someone else is having the "issue", you just have to make sure that you have installed and running winbind, samba and kerberos!

If everything looks good, that will most probably be the issue!

    Regards.

winbind is only used if you are trying to be part of a domain. It is not needed in anyway for a Windows style Samba workgroup. I use Samba all of the time and I never load winbind. Indeed this is a very old message thread. If you have a problem start your own thread and use chit-chat if you want to say something off topic or silly. Use soapbox for your opinion on openSUSE related topics. I shall close this thread.
