Thumbs down evdev driver for the mouse?

After extreme amounts of struggle and pain, I have discovered that despite the fact that xmodmap reports 32 buttons on my mouse, that the mouse driver "mouse" thinks that there are only 5 buttons on a mouse. Further, if you want any more, you have to install the "evdev" driver. Support for that driver seems to be unavailable for SuSE 11. Please tell me that this ain't so. I really, really, really hate scrolling my windows while trying to click button #2. I used to be able to remap it to my thumb button (SuSE 10.3), but no more because button 8 is beyond the scope of my mouse driver. What are my options, please? Thank you. (P.S. I've been at this on and off for months. You cannot imagine how tiresome this is.)
