Default OOo calc macros and memory leak/runaway

I have a problem that I am unable to resolve and there doesn't appear to
be any info on it (google, search forums etc). I'm running opensuse 11.0
x86_64 and the opensuse packaged openoffice 2.4.1 under KDE 3.5.9.

I have a spreadsheet converted from Excel and have re-created the macros
within calc. These are nearly complete (in that I have a few actions to
add), but I am having a problem with a "memory leak/runaway" - ie when I
    - go to tools->macros->run macro
    - add macros to a new toolbar through tools->customise->toolbars
after a short time disk activity starts and "sysinfo" shows the free
    memory down from 1.4GB + 300MB Caches to 14MB + 30MB Caches with free
swap down from 3.8GB to 1.9GB and everything virtually stops :-)

Organising or running macros through "tools->macros->organise macros"
    doesn't exhibit any problems.

Using kubuntu (32bit) in Virtualbox doesn't show the same symptoms.

I have downloaded the OOo versions of 2.4.1 and 3.0 to see if there is a
    difference.

Any suggestions on resolving the problem welcome.

    Thanks

I hate to admit a total screw-up on my part ......

After trying the OOo versions and getting an "incompatible" JRE error
message with 2.4.1, I discovered that the opensuse installation had a
JRE available but, for some reason, it was not selected :-( There was no
error message generated, presumably because it was suitable, but on
selecting it the problem "magically" disappeared :-)

Still don't know why it would occur as the macros are in Basic and still
    work after the error message.

Now I can get on with deciding on the best way for a four-field sort (I
    have found solutions).
