Thread: Need a screencasting program.

    Default Need a screencasting program.

I need to record my desktop, but Istanbul doesn't show where the file it creates goes. I tired to install Xvidcap form source but run ./configure and their was no "make" or "make install" in the follow. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu (just because) maybe I downgrade to OpenSuse 10.3 , thats only if I can't get this working by tomorrow.

Install xvidcap from the Packman repository, works fine for me.

    I use qt-recordmydesktop in KDE

    gtk-recordmydesktop in Gnome

    recordmydesktop in CLI

I have tried all the different methods of screen capture including py2vnc and nothing works as well for me as qt-recordmydesktop does.

It never crashes, does and outstanding job of capturing effects without artifacts or slow downs, the audio works extremely well in it and I use it all the time. I love playing around with it.

I then use ffmpeg to convert to an evil empire format called "flash" in the form of flv files so I can display them on the web and anyone can view them regardless of their OS, or browser.

Yes OGG (the format it saves into is great, but the fact is the great unwashed masses need something readily available, so I use flv on the web.

I just started using KDE4 and was showing some windows folks what a Linux desktop can do, including effects and a few of my favorite apps, it is a great way to help people understand that Linux isn't difficult, just different.

Anyways here is the recording I showed them.

It is extremely large, about 90 megs and 11 minutes long and may take a minute to buffer and load so be patient if it takes a minute.

    KDE 4.1 Desktop

To get smooth recording of effects, I use the option to use full shots at every frame.

    And audio setting to 44100.

Before changing those two settings my recordings would have artifacts, skip, and just not work very well.

You can see what changing just those two things do for me on my system anyways.
