Did you try to click on the Computer option on the taskbar, made sure you're on the applications tab, click "More Programs" and then drag the icons onto the Desktop?

You can use the whereis command in a konsole to find your newly installed program.
    Example:
    Code:
    lindy@lindys_contraption:~> whereis quake
    quake: /usr/local/games/quake
    Obscurum per obscurius.
-The obscure (explained) by the more obscure.
