Thread: ipod video converter for linux

  1. #1

Default ipod video converter for linux

I am trying to find a GUI based Linux program that would convert videos to ipod .mp4 format. Anyone know of a good one?

So far I've been forced to switch to Windows and use Videora, but I am tired of doing that.

I'm fairly sure avidemux (packman) will do that.

    Hopefully oldcpu will reply.

I'm pretty certain that ipod video is h.264 encoded.

ffmpeg handles that nicely and any front-end to that like tovid of avidemux should work for you.

They're in the packman and videolan repositories.

I don't own an ipod. Is that something that is grown in the garden?

Is there not more than one type of ipod? If so, does that mean there are different video formats?

I recommend you surf for this ... some hits I got were:
    * Convert movies for iPod playback - Play video on your iPod - Weekend Project - CNET reviews
    * .:: linux howtos ~ the video ipod ::.
    * Convert any video file for an iPod

Try winff. Despite the name is a linux frontend to ffmpeg so it also has to be installed. Works fine and it also allows to easyly convert videos to 3gp format (cellphones)

Thanks for all your help guys. I've installed avidemux and the qt4 frontend for it. There's a neat ipod configuration profile that makes it really easy!

avidemux is indeed a great tool. However it fails to recognize ogv or ogg video's. Any tool with gui which handles ogg too?

ffmpeg will do it I think, but I don't know of a front end.

A lot of the converted videos don't have properly synced audio. How do I enable audio sync in avidemux?
