Default KDE 4.1 Background + Plasma fails

After upgrading from KDE 4.1 rc1 to KDE 4.1 and playing around for a while with desktop effects, etc, Plasma seems to have failed. All of the plasmoids are gone, including panels, and the desktop is just a gray white checkerboard. I have since removed Xgl and compiz, removed the .kde4 folder, completely un- and re-installed KDE 4.1, and nothing works. I think its a plasma specific issue, since when i run plasma --waitforwm it crashes, and there is a Bad Window error everytime I try and launch plasma manually. I really don't know what to do short of a system reintstall keeping my home dir, and I can't do that anytime soon.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I know this is a few weeks old, but in case you are still trying to fix your Plasma problem, I just posted my solution to a similar issue here:
KDE 4.1.1 Upadate Checkerboard Problem - openSUSE Forums

Try forcing an update of ALL KDE4 packages to Factory-current versions. I had to login to an XFCE session as Root to fix it, but everything seems to be running smoothly, now. Good luck!
