I’m using a server with OpenSUSE 11.0 64Bit, KDE 3.5 and Xorg 7.3-110.9 and several clients with OpenSUSE 10.0 - 10.3.
And i’m trying to connect to the OpenSUSE 11 system with:
X -query NAME
The connection establishes and i can see KDM, click around, select usernames or shutdown the server. But when i try to login into KDE the system freezes befor ksplash. (Same with icewm)
If i try to connect with any system to a OpenSUSE 10.X system it works just fine.
On a stretch here as I don’t use this way of starting an X session, but as an extra thought:
When running ‘X -query NAME’, are you also running some things from your local 10.3 environment? Or is it exactly the same as forwarding X from the 11.0 server (only sending the screen output)?
Ifso, could it be there is something defined or installed in the openSUSE 11 X environment that gets started and is not supported on the local openSUSE 10.3 workstation?
I don’t know exactly how it works…
But X is a client-server combination, and instead of sending the pictures to a local client it sends the pictures (or whatever) to the remote client.
So it can be, that there is an incompatibility between X-Server 1.3 and 1.4. But what can be started on the server, that the client can’t understand? If commented out all Modules, DRI and composit for testing, but that doesn’t help.
I have the same problem but with Gnome. I see the gdm but when I login the desktop freezes after a while.
I tried to setup vncserver but…version 11 of OpenSuse has a lot of problems in terms of remote administration. I spent 2 hours only to setup remote login, or better to see a freezing screen, and this is a feature that you can configure in 2 minutes with gdm-setup. I’ve noticed that if you want to setup remote login with yast you have also to modify manually the configuration file in etc: i.e. if you check “Allow remote administration login” in “Login window” you still have to modify /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, because it is not update with this setting.
I found out, that my propblem occurs only if 10.2 or 10.3 trying to connect to the 11.0. with 9.X and 10.0 there is no problem. (I have no installation with 10.1).
So there seems to be a bug in 10.2 and 10.3, not in 11.0.
