    Default how to install gcc

Hi, I have opensuse 11 and I'd like to compile several programs, which depend on the gcc compiler

I have tried to locate the package with command
    zypper se gcc
but had no luck. I found only gcc-gij, which is already installed, but ./configure fails with error "configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH". And obviously I cannot install gcc from source, when I have not any compiler :-(

In debian, I've been used to use
    aptitude install gcc
    and everything was fine.

So what is the correct way in suse?

    Thank you.

    * marshalbasin,

Use Yast. gcc is a metapackage inlcuding different stuff.

    zypper install -t pattern devel_C_C++

This will install GCC and necessary development tools - you will need more than just GCC to compile most applications. You'll need to have the OSS install repository enabled for this to work.

Thank you. I will try it as soon as I will get to my suse machine :-)

It is perhaps stupid question, but please give me a hint how to enable OSS repositry yet ;-) I reall I have seen it somewhere in the yast GUI, but I do not know how to work with that, I'm used to command line :-( Thank you again!

Thank you, but I have not found it in yast. Could you please lead me a few steps where I can find it? I'm new to linux GUI tools like yast, I have used debian only in text mode till now, picked up suse because it should be suitable for beginers - installation was fine, but I'm lost :-(

Run Yast, click on Software management. Once the screen has loaded and
finished checking your configured sources, enter GCC in the search field
on the left and click on the Search button. You should get a list of
packages including one simply called gcc, tick the box next to it and
click on Accept. You can have to put your SuSE DVD in the drive,
depending on what configured sources you have.

To install the development pattern, simply...

    1. Open YaST Package Manager and wait for repositories to load
    2. Click on the dropdown that says "Groups" on the bottom-right
    3. Select "Patterns" from that list
    4. Wait for the list in the left column to refresh
    5. Scroll down in the left column until you find a heading titled "Development"
    6. Under this heading, select "Base Development"
    7. Click the "Install All" button
    8. If you want to install the "C/C++" Pattern, do the same with that development pattern
    9. Once you have selected the packages to install, click the "Apply" button in the bottom right
    10. This may take a minute or two do to the number of packages
    11. Once completed, decline to add or remove more packages

Now, for adding the OSS Repository, do the following...

    1. Open YaST
    2. Click the "Software" link in the left column
    3. Click on the link for "Software Repositories"
    4. Wait for the repositories to refresh
    5. Click the "Add" button
    6. Select "Community Repositories"
    7. Wait for the list to load
    8. Check the box for "Main Repository (OSS)"
    9. Press the "OK" button and Import any keys requested (unless you don't want to import them)
    10. Press the "OK" button and wait for the repository to be added

    Hope that helps!
