Thread: unable to configure AR242x wireless adapter

  1. #1

Default unable to configure AR242x wireless adapter

AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (Not connected)
    BusID : 0000:04:00.0

Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details.

Since there is a message like that, my wireless card must be not functioning. Obviously that is my question: how do I get it to work?

To start, at the top of this page, click on the forum name (wireless)
just to the left of the subject of this thread. You'll now see that
the first few threads in this forum are 'sticky'.

Examine each one, try that stuff, and post back if you
    have more specific question(s).

Sorry for wasting your time with that useless post. Although, at least it got me started, thanks to your response.

    Here are the results:

    Device information
    04:00.0 Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x
    04:00.0 0200: 168c:001c (rev 01)
    Some kind of a problem
    ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:04:00.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:04:00.0 to 64
    ath5k_pci 0000:04:00.0: registered as 'phy0'
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:04:00.0 disabled
ath5k_pci: probe of 0000:04:00.0 failed with error -5
I followed this sticky, and concluding from at what point I got this message, there is a firmware problem. Also the message in my first post showed that. Can someone more knowledgeable confirm before I start messing around with that?

Thank you, although I earlier found the drivers from Index of /suse/11.0. At least now I got an e-mail notification, so I could tell how the problem got solved for me.

I got mine going with ndiswrapper. Get the driver here: http://blakecmartin.googlepages.com/...-32-0.2.tar.gz For 64bit change the 32 in the link to 64.

    Install the .inf file with
    Code:
    ndiswrapper -i path_to_.inf
    Remove ath5k
    Code:
    modprobe -r ath5k
Add ath5k to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file
    Code:
    blacklist ath5k
    modprobe ndiswrapper module
    Code:
    modprobe ndiswrapper
Open Yast>System>/etc/sysconfig Editor. Expand System>Kernel and select MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT. Add ndiswrapper. Reboot. Then set it up with Yast again. Just be sure to change the module option while setting up the card under the hardware tab from ath5k to ndiswrapper. You should be good to go after another reboot.
