Thread: Mplayer can't play vids anymore, x11 error?

  1. #1

Default Mplayer can't play vids anymore, x11 error?

The only thing that has changed on my Opensuse 11 system this week has been any of the updates that appear on the bottom right. I would try to uninstall those updates, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do that...

Anyway, I have Nvida 8800GT video card and I had video all up and running with no problems but now when I click on a video, mpg or wmv or whatever, it says "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device." When I go to to the Preferences > Video and change the driver to "gl2 X11 (openGL)" I can play video but anything bigger than 500x500 or so and it gets really, really slow. I currently have, and had working, the "xv X11/Xv" driver in there. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

There've been several updates this last week... and at least one kernel
    update. Have you rebooted lately?

I have similar problems with my video too. Had started a thread a few days ago, but have not received any replies. But I am on Intel 945 chipset on a laptop. I have tried MPlayer, VLC and Totem and same problem in all. When the screen is small everything is fine, but when I put it to full screen the video is very very slow.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I had the same problem. I disabled the "Desktop Effects". It started working normally again. Good Luck.

Tried this, this is what I get: I'm not sure what all this means exactly, other than tell me that the video DOES work according to these tests, just very slowly. But other mpgs and wmv don't work at all, in the mplayer plugin OR in the standalone version...

Did you try switching OFF "DESKTOP EFFECTS"?? Not sure how it affects the video playback, but it sure worked for me.

    Good Luck.

Yeah, sorry, Desktop Effects have never been enabled on this machine. Forgot to mention that

Then I guess you just have to wait for experts to reply back with suggestions. Good Luck.
