i really want to ablity to boot back and forth but if not just
HELP ME GET MY FILES BACK ive tried mounting them but theres no sda for windows
= screwed
HELP!!!

Looks like you have accidentally erased your xp partition.

lies!
but i just did the installation and rebooted it
no windows :frowning:
but i have really important files ther
isnt that suse just dosent read it or something ?!?
come on genuises/hacker/nerd people there must be a way

Try going into yast > system > partitioner

Have a look there for any windows partitions.

ok in partionar thing there are three linux stuff and one i do not know ?
so here
cant coppy and paste but
its like
/dev/sda start 0 end 30400?
type HDt7(and alot more numbers)
so thats probaly my windows
but wen i try to mount it it says an error?
soo yea?

Thats not your windows partition, thats your entire drive.

Type Hd7****

Thats your hard drive model, Hitachi Deskstar.

If no windows partitions are listed, it has been erased :frowning:

To me your windows partition has gone: sda1 that usually in a tipical machine is dedicated to windows, now has the 82 signature(swap). You probably at install time have choosen to dedicate the whole disk to linux( it is one of the partitioning options). I’m sorry but i really figure it’s gone

i think in the system cd thing theres an repair advance option to find deleted partons i did it on sda3
there was 2 options
so ill do dat and report back :D:rolleyes::cool::eek:

so theres like no recycle bin where the partion is delted cough
or he files cause very important company files for my dad

If you want to restore a partition have a look at testdisk : TestDisk - CGSecurity

It can retrieve and set old partition layouts… if the data is not overwritten good chance you can restore important items.

Good luck,
Wj

again im new to linux so how exactly do u install it ?i dowload the thing but??

The problem is that you are installing an operating system so no recycle bin because it is a facility of a running os. And worse when you install , any os puts on the disk a basic skeleton of it’s file system. So the sectors have been overwritten. To me no chance to retrieve something. An advice: any partitioner has to be used very carefully and is better to read any advice message before. Even if you install windows from scratch it asks several times and with different keys combination to confirm. Sorry but i don’t think you’ll get something from that disk

dude i ran the setup thourgh it workede fine it found the hp pavilon thing i put it as the normal boot thing and then this should up
(
ok used the program testdisk to recover one of my lost partiton things
it did so i rebooted the computer after rebooting it the windows didnt work(it was my lost patiton)
so back to suse
it would go
load up
and then it said that i have to fix manually
my reactio (wtf?!?)
enter root password
i did
it said in bright red
repair filesystem # _

i was ok i guessed some numbers here and there
and it listed a possible 1598 different codes
?
help now both windows an linux do not work!
help plz
)

so i beleve i am screwed in everyway
possible i cannot boot windows ive tried almost everything there is to try in the setup thing and now im a screw pumkin :(

Wow! Absolutely amazing. To install SuSE over an existing operating system
is not easy. You were asked for confirmation when you reset the
partitioning, since SuSE defaults to resizing Windows partitions, not
overwriting. You were prompted for final confirmation before it even began
any changes or installation. The hardest part to believe you
did “innocently” is forcing a new partition scheme. Yes, it’s a few
clicks, but they’re not all ‘next’ or ‘accept’ buttons either.

Based on the fdisk output you posted, your data is essentially gone. The
2GB swap partition and the 20GB root partition have overwritten Windows
entirely. Anything salvageable would be in the tail-end of the drive, and
not recoverable by mere mortals.

Love THIS quote:

“so im awsome in windows but
linux is a whole nother thing im fairly new (2 days)”

Again, SuSE is VERY careful during installs, and the defaults are NEVER to
destroy anything. You had to have changed the settings, through a series
of menus that clearly told of the effects.

And this is soooo endearing…

“come on genuises/hacker/nerd people there must be a way”

{chuckle} ok smart boy… where would you PUT it?

“so theres like no recycle bin where the partion is delted” [sic]

Didn’t read, just clicked.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

“now im a screw pumkin”

Yup.

I’m afraid your data is gone, and not retrievable without heroic measures.

This is how we learn, I’ve done things like this, albeit in the past, when
linux was less friendly. I imagine you’ll be more careful in the future.
Reading is a wonderful skill, comprehension more so.

Use the System CD you have and reinstall windows. Try the SuSE installer
again, read the texts and alerts that appear. You’ll be enjoying Linux
soon.

Hope Daddy had a backup…

dude
i did’t do anything out of the ordinary
theres only one way i could think i had to abort the setup the first tyme becasue i was being werid then i just ran the installation
again idk if that did anything
then i went to go to play pool while the installation was running
my mom called me and started scxreaming "where is my documents where is all my files " u better fix this
and ive been tryin
so i dont know if my mom touched something during the end shes not an idiot with a computer or aborting the installation in the middle did this but i didnt do ****
so help maybe?

> so help maybe?

you erased all the previous Window™ and its associated data,
important or not…

there is an OUTSIDE chance that if you STOP overwriting on that disk
immediately, it MIGHT be possible to recover some portion of the data
you erased and overwrote…

go to google and search on
drive recovery service

there you will find many companies/individuals who provide services to
folks who suffer catastrophic hard drive failure OR inadvertently
ERASE there own data…

those companies perform a service neither you nor your dad can do at
home with any free software (or even software you can buy, as far as i
know)…they do it for a living, using specialized (and often in-house
developed tools/software) and they charge a LOT of money to do it…

good luck on that…and, in the future i’d suggest you do more reading,
for example:

also, while there is a great benefit to clicking quickly when playing
games on computers, the quicker you click when performing system
administration duties (such as installing and setting up a new operating
system) the more damage you can do…

ok i think might be a slim chance im locked out of my computer i can acess the grub terminal and the normal terminal
i put fdisk -l
and theres something new fat32
?
and is there a way to boot it from the terminal because i think i have to put it manually in the menu.lst file or not
and
fdisk /mbr
says that it is unable toopen so ya
maybe ther is a chance
?
:)(:

Have you tried booting with a LiveCD (also so your disk is not written but just read) to see what info can be accessed?

The testdisk tool will only get the partition size, layout and specific MBR information restored. If no data is visible you will need data recovery tools, for linux partitions it will be a harder job, but for NTFS & fat there are many tools.
I do think it’s time you get someone ’ on site ’ that knows some more about what to do here as every wrong step will make chance of recovery slimmer…
