Thread: How to run M$ Office 2007 in wine

Default How to run M$ Office 2007 in wine

    I found these Instructions:
Wine AppDB - Microsoft Office 2007

When installing, you'll notice that it slows down when the progress bar reaches about 60%. It takes a long time to install, so you just have to go eat something, then come back later and it will be done.

Normally, I'd just use Open Office, but the professors at our school send out documents with the new M$ 2007 format, and as far as I know they only open up under Office 2007.

Here's a screenshot of it running on my system:

Have you tried those docs in Open Office? What happens in Office 2000, etc? Worth a try IMHO.

I don't have Office 2007, I use Office 2000. With the latest "Wine", it works 100%.

Here is a guide: Wine Reviews: Wine-Reviews.net | Winehq, Bordeaux, CodeWeavers, Darwine, Cedega, PlayOnLinux, winetricks, Wine-Doors, Linux, Ubuntu, Mac, OpenSolaris, Debian, FreeBSD, Windows
According to that guide, you need some files from "Cross Over Games".

Or, you could install winxp with SP2 in "VirtualBox" and install it that way. the beauty of Linux is that there are a number of ways to success

I just found out that OO 2.4 will open the new .docx format. OO 2.3 and earlier won't. I don't think you can open a regular file made by office 2007 in earlier versions of office, unless it's saved in compatibility mode.

Only openSUSE 11.0 OO2.4 will open .docx file not other distros 2.4
    like Ubuntu etc.
This is because some exchange of codes with MS with Novell. Its part of that exchange to use .docx under openSUSE.

It looks like interesting to install MS Office 2007, but there are some concerns:

    1. License activation for OEM and retail version.
    2. WGA check in order to get (security) updates

To overcome these concerns my preferred way is to create a virtual machine with VMWare or VirtualBox and install XP in this VM. I prefer to install XP Retail over Vista, because I've encountered a bad update issue in Vista even everyting was legally OK.

The only things I miss in OO.o are

    1. A comparable BASIC environment for OO.o. Not just the one which is included in OO.o. I find VBA much better than OO.o basic because:

    a. Faster performance
    b. Automatic completion in editor
    c. Far more sophisticated forms and event handling mechanism
    d. Better online or F1 documentation
    e. Options to protect the macro source code against illegal copying or other misuse
    f. Objects are more strongly typed. I can say 'Dim sps as Worksheet' in VBA, but in OO.o I must write: 'Dim sps as Object'.

    2. I'd like to be able to use Access databases not just to extract data, but I'd also like to be able to update the database using SQL.
    3. I'd like to be able to manupilate Base forms programmatically using events

There are all valid reasons to use MS Office under Wine in Linux or making a virtual machine.

I've had MS Office 2007 not want to install at all. I get to the license screen, and it does not let me enter the CD key at the time of installation - it freezes on the last letter/digit.

If I push continue without entering the key, it freezes before the next step. I'm on OpenSUSE 11.1, a new installation. Switched from Ubuntu.

While I'm sure the VM Ware solution will work, I've decided I don't want XP or any other windows on this computer at all. As far as office updates, they are handled through IE7, so perhaps installing IE7 will work under wine to update Office?

Anybody had any experience with this? Usually I am on Open Office anyway, and just want MS for an occasional guest or for some compatibility testing.

    @ GoManVanGogh,

Which version of Wine you have?

Update to the latest version (1.1.13) by adding Wine repo: Index of /repositories/Emulators:/Wine/openSUSE_11.1

I'm on 1.1.9. I've added the repository (hope I've done it right, I'm new to OpenSUSE and Yast, but it looks like it's getting added properly.

Will let you know if it's fixed. Thanks
