    Default System fester without swap

    Hi all !

    I've got openSUSE 11.0 and 1024Mo

My swap partition is on another disk than the root one. I have noticed that my system was slow, HDD keeping making noise for everything like clicking on a menu.

I have also noticed that my swap was always used at 30-40% whereas RAM was nearly all free. I have so decided to desactivate the swap. And now my system is much faster.

    Why ?

    Thanks

'swap', aka virtual memory, is what the system uses when it is
(typically) out of RAM to use for regular operations. It does this so
the system can keep on running when (usually) it would otherwise simply
not function when more RAM was requested. That's the upside, but the
downside is that, because it uses the hard drive for this space, any
accesses to this part of "memory" is exponentially slower than RAM.
Disabling RAM doesn't necessarily mean you'll be out of luck running
things but eventually you'll hit a limit of RAM and you'll probably wish
you had SWAP at that point. Anyway, I'd recommend leaving it enabled
and available but add more RAM to your system if you are low so SWAP
    isn't used as soon.

    Good luck.

I totally agree with you but to my mind the system is using swap instead of ram, when it is not necessary
