dictionary

is there any english-english dictionary that i use for my opensuse 10.3?

please give the download link

A search of the Software page brought up: jDictionary (OpenSUSE 10.3).

The link contains the 1-Click Installer for the program.

I’m not sure how great the dictionary is, as I have no real experience to speak of with it, but that one seems popular.

zypper install kdenetwork3-query

exit

$ kdict

best dictionaries i found in suse(linux) are :
stardic StarDict - The best dictionary program in linux and windows

and sdicviewer : this one just needs Python and its own dictionaries and in lighter that stardic

so you can choose between these two

but they are not english-english dictionary

i want a dictionary like as babylon that i work easily

> but they are not english-english dictionary

what is an “english-english dictionary”? (is it one when you look up an
english word you get its definition, what it means, in english…or
what?? maybe other words with similar meanings, like: again, and,
besides, ditto, further, furthermore, in addition, including, likewise,
more, moreover, plus, similarly, too, with, yet…)

I assume this is in KDE4 but in KDE3.5, Configure Konqueror > Webshortcuts and tick Merriam Webster Dictionary.

The shortcut in Konqueror is dict: so just enter
dict: <your word> in the Konqueror location bar.

The original request was for an English-English dictionary. I am not
entirely clear what this means, but the Merriam Webster appears to be
what may be called an American-English dictionary (English as used in
USA), whereas the Oxford English Dictionary is an English-English
dictionary (ie the language as used in England). IIRC, the Oxford also
has “colonies” versions which cover English as used in, for example,
Canada and New Zealand.

Before someone sensitive howls  the use of “colonies” was to indicate
the mechanism through which English was spread and not a derogatory term.

Wordreference (also in the KDE list) uses the Oxford dictionaries.

hi

i mean definition of a word

please give me link to download it

i don’t want on-line dictionary

> i don’t want on-line dictionary

oh! did you try google before you asked here??

this google search
english dictionary download linux
turns up 367,000 hits…

ONE of them is: http://www.linux.com/articles/60803

which talks about StarDict…

which can be loaded with YaST…
then free download the dictionaries you wish…

i’d guess the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary would fit you, it is
on this page along with lots of others, you can have them all:
<http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries_dictd-www.dict.org.php>

and, stardict-tools (if you choose to install that also) can be used to
convert dictionaries of DICT, wquick, mova and pydict to StarDict format…

enjoy.
