    Maybe you should give some information on your experiences on programming - are you an absolute beginner or just new to Java?

    Not new to programming I am a retired programmer
    I use to do programming in COBOL and Fortran
    But java is new for me

    Based on that, I'd recommend this one:
    Amazon.com: Java In A Nutshell, 5th Edition: David Flanagan: Books

    [That same publisher also has a whole series of Java books that are area-specific, such as
    for database, etc.]

    So, me too, i would advice "Java in a Nutshell", because it focuses on the Java-Specific aspects and will not bore you many pages with the why and how of if-statements.
