opensuse 11 frustrations

there are essentially three:
problem 1:
the graphics look weird … when scrolling, the texts get all wishy-washy … when running the cursor over menues, they get all messed up … and the window headers often take a strange kind of pattern;
problem 2:
wireless … a) i have got an internal wireless card from realtek (rtl8187l) … as in opensuse 10.3, it’s not recognized by yast … tried to install the driver i downloaded from the manufacturer, but for some reason this is not working anymore (this used to work with the “./wlan0up” command from the folder via terminal) …
b) so i thought: well, let’s invest in a usb wireless usb adapter (linksys wusb100) and go via madwifi … madwifi that came with the distro doesn’t work either, yast doesn’t find the adapter, so i am totally in the dark on this one …
problem 3:
my headphone outlet doesn’t work anymore i have got sound from the integrated speakers, but if i try to plug in headphones, absolute silence …
i must say: so far i am not quite as happy with this new distro as i was with 10.3 … hope you can help
specs:
gateway t1616 notebook
2gigs ram
150gigs harddrive
single boot (this is a linux only pc)
opensuse 11 (downloaded june 26)
kernel Linux 2.6.25.9-0.2-default x86_64
processor amd turion 64x2, speed 1.6 gig

Have u made a bug report for all these?
If not plz do

yes … send it off along with the inquiry … thanks, theo

This works on most laptops, but not all. When you say “absolute silence” I assume you mean sound stops on your speakers, and you get no sound from your headphones?

Typically, this is because you have a bad setting in your mixer. Don’t forget to turn the headphones volume up in the mixer.

When you get your laptop on the Internet (which you haven’t got yet), please, can you copy and paste (and run) the following diagnostic script in an xterm/konsole while your Laptop is connected to the Internet? When prompted for a password, please enter your root password. And where asked to type information, if you do not understand a question, please type “NO”. Also, please report the # of input/output jacks as best you can. The command to run the script is here:

wget http://home.cfl.rr.com/infofiles/tsalsa && su -c 'bash ./tsalsa'

Please also post the output of copying and pasting the following commands one line at a time in an xterm/konsole:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2

thanks you for replying … i ran the scripts, still no sound when headphones are plugged in … theo

The scripts are NOT designed to fix your sound. They are designed to provide information. They give you a URL that links to a page, where a summary of your computer’s audio hardware and audio software configuration information is posted.

Please paste here that URL.

The idea is I am to read that URL, and based on that I will try to give you a recommendation.

In addition to providing the URL producted by running the diagnostic script, please provide the output of the commands I asked you to run in this post:

Thankyou.

sorry … still kinda new to this … anyway:

thanks again … theo

Madwifi doesn’t support USB dongles. Try Ndiswrapper.

Thanks. That tells me 64-bit openSUSE-10.3 with a STAC9205 hardware audio codec.

Reference your mixer, I note you have IEC958 ON. Try switching it off to see if it makes any difference.

Amixer contents for card 1 [HDMI] _____________________________________
amixer set 'IEC958',0 on

.

I can’t see anthing obviously wrong with your configuration. I am somewhat taken aback by the number of alsa and pulseaudio apps you have installed. Why so many? IMHO the more you install, the more likely you are to break something. Did you take precise notes of what you installed on your own (without a solid reason? If so, you could considering cleaning that up and removing… carefully … very carefully). But don’t remove if you don’t know exactly what you are doing.

Anyway, what I propose is we try some edits to your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. You posted this:

options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-hda-intel
# dP62.3eubOLksOn3:Radeon X1200 Series Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
# 5Dex.uqQijx37meA:SBx00 Azalia
alias snd-card-1 snd-hda-intel

The ALSA-Configuration.txt file gives these options for a STAC9205:

	STAC9205/9254
	  ref Reference board
	  dell-m42	Dell (unknown)
	  dell-m43	Dell Precision
	  dell-m44	Dell Inspiron

So try the following /etc/modprobe.d/sound file (saving the file after your changes):

options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m42
# dP62.3eubOLksOn3:Radeon X1200 Series Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
# 5Dex.uqQijx37meA:SBx00 Azalia
alias snd-card-1 snd-hda-intel

and then restart your alsa from an xterm/konsole with root permissions with: rcalsasound restart testing your sound.

If that doesn’t work, replace “dell-m42” with “dell-m43”, save the file, restart your sound with rcalsasound restart testing your sound.

If that doesn’t work, replace “dell-m43” with “dell-m44”, save the file, restart your sound with rcalsasound restart testing your sound.

If that doesn’t work, then I note an update to the STAC9205 between alsa 16RC2 (which you have) and alsa 1.0.16 (final release) on the STAC9205 mute capability:
Search results - AlsaProject for STAC9205

In which case, you may need to update your alsa per the guidance here:
Alsa-update - openSUSE-11.0 via zypper

… but one cautionary note, the examples in that guide are for users who have the nominal alsa packages installed, … and not a bunch extra. You appear to have installed a BUNCH extra … Hence it may not help you.

Anyway, good luck !!

greetings all,
thanks so much for helping out with this … here’s a quick update:

  1. wifi has been fixed …
  2. headphone outlet: i must admit that i am not that good with code, so i kind of putting that on the backburner  … i really would like to fix this
    3. graphic problem: still get text ‘smeared’ when i scroll in firefox and openoffice, or when selecting in the yast base menu … some of the topbars of windows (especially amarok) look as if the can’t decide what colour to take, and they end up like zebra-striped … could someone help me to fix this first
    thanks again … theo

okay … getting there … #3: the problem seems to be oxygen … as soon as i took it off that desktop option, texts and headers are normal again …
well: off to # 2 … theo

I have a HP tx2000z tablet pc. I have vista x64 (ehh) and openSUSE 11 x86_64. I got my wifi and other problems working.

The only items not yet fixed are:
headphone, spdif, mic jacks.
mic on screen.
touch/tablet feature (including pen,eraser…)
fingerprint scanner.
ability to forward internet from my phone to laptop via bnep0 or pan. (i can connect the two devices and assign an ip to bnep0, but no rx packets, only tx)
