Default Giving up on this 11.0 garbage

OK this is the last straw. This piece of dung manages to crash BOTH my Windows X servers at random without leaving so much as a hint as to why. It's not worth investigating. This thing is just pure shite. I'm going back to 10.3. In truth, the only thing I was interested in was KDE 4, and that's a pile of poo as well. So is Firefox 3.0 - all in all, this entire release is a total disaster.

Open source is getting as sloppy and disorganized as closed source. It's disheartening.

Now to spend the next three to five hours restoring 10.3 and another day reconfiguring Websphere. I wasted an entire week on this ****. To the team - thanks dudes. No wonder people are flocking to Ubuntu.

If you weren't so inept, you wouldn't have issues.

Open source is getting as sloppy and disorganized as closed source
More like people who shouldn't be allowed near computers are flocking to OSS without any understanding of how the system works. That is sad.

Seems like your crashing issue would be linked to the KDE4. Running KDE
3.5should fix that. Firefox 3 I haven't had nor seem issues with but I
wouldn't throw the blame on openSUSE developers for a third party app.

In the future you might want to think of running things in a virtual
environment or on a dev server first before rolling it to a production
    machine.

Please refrain from personal attacks. This is the second warning. Next
attack will cause the thread to get closed in the least.

Like Ubuntu didn't have that X upgrade that broke everybody's X server a while back and left everybody at a Command Line? It was fixed quickly at least.

From my meager experience (I haven't a clue what Microchannel is, is that pre-2002?) problems like that, as frustrating as they are, are some other issue than the distro. Especially if 10.3 works fine on the same hardware.

My first culprit I would check is the installation media. That's one reason why I'm using Net Installs now (that, and I don't have a DVD drive on my laptop). I've had an Ubuntu installation go all the way through without incidence but still mess up because some of the CD file(s) didn't install properly. New, fresh burn and it worked like a charm.

Also, as rare as it is, sometimes gremlins get in during installation for no apparent reason and re-installing fixes it (even with the same media).

Yes it is frustrating. Been there, done that and they were sold out of t-shirts.

KDE4 is immature. Firefox 3.0 actually works well, but it does IMHO need tuning in its about:config, and I think (not sure) a large bookmarks.html badly affects its performance. One needs to trim that.

I noticed your previous post here was a rant and not a call for help:
Suse 11.0 on VMware Workstation 6.0.4 - openSUSE Forums

I searched further on your handle I could not find one support request from you to resolve problems. Not one!! Kudos to you for spending so much time trying to solve problems by yourself, but there are users here, on our forum, who will (on their own time, as volunteers) try to help if you post the specifics of your problem.

Are we, the users of http://forums.opensuse.org/ so grumpy and nasty that its too intimidating to post a help request?

I note you are going back to 10.3, ... good on ya ! My main PC is still 10.3, although unlike you, I think 11.0, which is running on my test PC with KDE-3.5.9 is VERY VERY good.

But as for flocking back to Ubuntu, well you noted your main reasons for trying 11.0 was KDE4 and Firefox3. If you read a recent interview that Mark Shuttleworth (founder and CEO of Ubuntu gave) he admitted major problems with Ubuntu and firefox3. Also, the "word on the street" is Ubuntu's KDE4 implementation is SIGNIFICANTLY worse (and more buggy) than openSUSEs.

And a final caveat, I have good friends who use Ubuntu, they think it great, and I support them best I can via email. Many users like Ubuntu, I think the distribution has done good things for Linux, and I don't want my remarks misconstrued as a Ubuntu criticism. Rather my comments are intended to note that the "grass is always greener next door" and that Ubuntu is not much different (and in some cases worse) than openSUSE.

Only I was on KDE 3, for this reason, obviously.

I have been doing SuSE since the early versions in the mid 90s and have always been a very enthusiastic user and supporter. This release is junk from stem to stern - it is unworthy of the fine reputation that SuSE has earned for tight engineering. There is no doubt in my mind that the effort to out-Vista Vista has caused this debacle. The goals of UNIX on the desktop have been forgotten. C++ as a development idiom is dead. It's time to move on. You can't compete with OS-X with work that is this shoddy.
