    Default openSUSE Updater question

Just need a little bit of clarification to make sure the updater is working properly. When I check the updater, it says "No updates available."

When I go into YaST, however, Package->All Packages->Update if newer version available, there are 137 packages to be updated.

    What am I missing here?

The first are security updates only, updates that u should do in order to have a secure system.
The second are updates for your applications in order to have the newest version of the applications u have installed.

I think I must not have explained clearly. I know what you're talking about there but in online updates, now there's nothing. No security updates, nothing. If I go into YaST Install Software however, and do Packages->All Packages->Update if newer version available, it lists 137 packages (there's no choice between security update or other). I don't even know what the packages are at that point. Why are there 137 newer versions that aren't showing up in the update? What am I missing?

I think what you are experiencing is what I learned a few days ago. The updater you are referencing is only looking for patches by default, and as the other poster stated, these are security-related.

If you choose the option in yast, you are getting package updates, which means all newer versions of each package installed.

Try checking the updater, then clicking "details" to get the larger window, then click the "upgrades" tab (patches tab is default).

    Plz read my post again!!!
The updater wnts to keep your system secure. It doesnt care to make u have the latest and cutting edge packages. If u have kde 3.5.8 it will install security updates for 3.5.8 ifu have 3.5.9 it will install security updates for 3.5.9.
    Now the yast>all package>update if...
    makes yoyr system
to be upto date and have the latest cutting edge software. So if u have kde 3.5.8 it will upgrade it to 3.5.9 without giving any worries for security updates.
After u see the 139 packages to be updated just press ok and u will see witch packages are to be updated.
So,there are newest verisons of your packages but NOT security updates. They ae just updates, uknow new colours, sounds, features etc...
There, i wrote the same things twice...

Ah the second time was much clearer, thank you. I misinterpreted your first post. What if I want notification on all bleeding edge software? How can I set up openSUSE to alert me to that?

    wnj92996,

Man, I'm struggling here hehe! Again, I'm not clear on where you mean. From what I see there are two places where I can check the 'updater'. There's the openSUSE Updater in the taskbar where if I click on it, it just says "No updates available." I can configure the applet but that's not what you're talking about either. Then there's the Online Update (Menu->Computer->YaST->Online Update) but I couldn't find what you're describing there either. My apologies for the hassle! I appreciate both of your help!

From the updater applet on the kicker panel
Right click and choose "Configure Applet ..."
On the dialog that appears, tick the checkbox "Show available upgrades when backend provides them (experts only).
    Click OK

From the updater applet on the kicker panel
Right click and choose "Check Now"
    A dialog appears, with tabs.
The patches tab shows by default - it only lists security related patches.
The upgrade tab lets you upgrade applications.
