In past when you like to use that command you
have to build the database first
A bad thing was that new files made after the databasecreated was not added to the database.
So you do not have a other option than deleting the database and recreated it, after
sometimes.
I discover that now the database is created automatic , but is also maintain automatic or is still necessary to delete and created again ?

Any help is most welcome

are you sure you don't talk about "locate"? Because I never had to build a database for "whereis".

No I mean whereis , but that was let say 20 years ago I never use it because at that time disk space was still a problem.
I forget all about it until recently I was searching for a file , and I gave the command
make whereis and thats why I discover that it was already there.

The man page for whereis states that it only looks in certain places for info,
and bases it's output on filenames.

It searches in these locations:

/{bin,sbin,etc}

/usr/{lib,bin,old,new,local,games,include,etc,src,man,sbin,X386,TeX,g++-include}

/usr/local/{X386,TeX,X11,include,lib,man,etc,bin,games,emacs}

So a database is not necessary, and output will always be based on current
availability.
