Thread: Installation questions

  1. #1

    Default Installation questions

I just installed Opensuse 11.0 and I was wondering if I need to do anything in regards the firewall settings in order for me to connect to my home network and internet.
Is samba, network access from other computers ready to work?
Is connectivity is supposed to work just right of the box?

Would you please tell me of any book I can buy to learn more about suse so I can apply it towards the certification test later? I used Suse 8.1 before but it seems a lot has change sincs then.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Welcome, Mmira.

On the topic of your internet question: if you are using a wired connection, such as an ethernet connection, OpenSUSE will already be configured to allow you to access the internet. If you want to see the configuration for your internet access, open a terminal window and login as root through issuing the su command and entering your root password. Once there, enter the command: yast2 lan. Once that loads, you can change the configuration and settings for your internet connection.

Sorry if I posted that too basic: trying to make it as plain as possible.

Samba is ready to work except for identifying the computer and checking the firewall. Go to Yast --> network services --> Samba server --> identity
and put a workgroup name same as the workgroup name opn al the other computers in the LAN. Put not a DC. Put a netbios name to by which the computer icon will be named in the network browsers over the LAN.

Under startup double check there is a port open through the firewall.

Under "Shares" you toggle various shares on or off.
