Thread: KDE 4.1 Speed Tweaks?

  1. #1

    Default KDE 4.1 Speed Tweaks?

Decided to enable buildservice and upgrade to 4.1 RC.

So far, so good. Running much better than 4.0 was. However, when I add the Folder View plasmoid, it's really, really slow. My machine should have no problem handling this:

    AMD Phenom 9500, 3GB DDR2, 8800GT, Nvidia 171 beta driver.

Any tweaks to speed up Plasma?

Well, that's certainly a good thing.

I like the Folder View plasmoid a lot. However, when I try to move it, it's like moving through jello. I'm thinking it's a 2D problem or possibly and XGL problem. Not sure.

Anyway to speed things up for plasmoids and widgets.

I heard that there were perf issues with some Nvidia cards, though my 7300gt
works fine but iirc 8800's seem to have issues - try upgrading your drivers
to 173.14 (or newer if there's any)

Scrolling and many other effects are horribly slow with the Nvidia driver unfortunately.

I tried some of the old fixes like "RenderAccel" "On" but it didn't help. Guess I'll just have to wait for Nvidia to get out a better driver.

Someone suggested a config to take off hardware xrender acceleration to a software acceleration and that improved performance, but I can't remember where. I imagine it is in the KDE 4 desktop effects somewhere. I just don't use KDE 4 personally.

I've tried xrender and OpenGl with every combination of settings.

It's weird that a game like Second Life runs better than is does in Windows, and yet resizing windows is like running a Pentium III.

It is a common problem of nvidia 8000/9000 cards
