    Default netgear wg111v2 usb dongle - rtl8187 drivers - can't get ip.

This is a bit of a weird one. I can get my dongle paired with my router but every configuration tool i've tried can't get an IP address. What is strange is that it worked perfectly the first time I used it just after installation of Opensuse 11 I even installed nvidia drivers from the web so I can be sure it's not just cached data. Whilst downloading the windows codecs my computer froze (it has a few hardware faults that make it do this it is unrelated though as they are rare and do not prevent wireless networking whilst on windows) when I booted back in knetworkmanager could no longer connect. Any thoughts on this problem?

    Relevant specs are:

Installed Driver RTL8187 supplied with DVD
    OS Opensuse 11, 32 bit
    Kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1-pae
Wifi Dongle Netgear wg111v2 (WG111 - NETGEAR.com) It's page on the Netgear website.

    Thank you in advance.

    hi,

Have you resolved this issue? I am working with openSUSE 11.0, a netgear usb wireless, no ethernet cable, and KDE 4.0. Network manager says wireless card is not connected and usb isn't connected. I am also new to linux.

    Regards,
    Wesley

Your Netgear USB wireless might not be the same as the OP's. Open a console
terminal and enter the command 'lsusb'. What does it report? If it says "command
not found", do you have a DVD or a CD? If the DVD, then install the package
    named "usbutils".

Enter the command 'dmesg' in your terminal and scroll back through the listing
looking for anything related to USB wireless. Report what you find.

In KNM, use the "Edit Connection" option to delete your existing connection, and
"Add New Connection" to add it back. I think it didn't get properly saved the
first time, or it got corrupted in the crash.

Unfortunately I no longer have the Dongle I have a wireless card now instead. Even more unfortunately the computer is currently having major hardware issues and will be replaced in january. (Currently I am stuck using my laptop).
