Default OpenSuse 11 still locking up

Hi all,

I am trying to figure out why my Opensuse11 is still locking up.

It is so random, that I can't put a finger on it.

It happens either when I open thunderbird, or when firefox is on, or when I am viewing the mount folders, or all of the above together.

It is a fresh install from yesterday too, the previous install was doing it.

Where can I start to look?

Thanks

i just posted something to you, to your original thread somewhere else, but:

- are you running beagle? if so, disable or delete it

- are you running reiser file system on any partition? if so there is a
known problem with it on v 11.0

my guess is one of those above will fix it...if not, then continue

- and did it start locking up immediately after the new initial install
from yesterday....after all patches were installed BUT before you added
anything new to the system or make any changes--like loading the nvidia
driver?

- IF it was unstable before loading the nvidia driver, is it sill
afterwards, without loading any other new thing?

- do you have anything plugged into any USB slot? if so, shut down,
unplug all USB and then boot....is it stable now?

- are you running 64 bit (some say 32 is more stable, and just as fast
if you have 4 GB of RAM or less, and don't load up with HUGE files)

- i don't remember, are you using KDE4? firefox3?

- if you boot, and immediately open an xterm and run top...do you (for
example) see something begin to suck up all the cpu just before the freeze?

- did you install atop, if so, do the hard drives turn red and go very
busy just prior to/as you get the freeze?

- is it possible the harddisk space available to SuSE is pretty close to
full?

- did you install htop, if so what jumps to the top of that list just
before/as you get the freeze

Well, actually I too have the same problem, but it happens only when Firefox3 is functioning. The system freezes for about10 seconds and then gets back on track again.

I also have Compiz running, so most probably its consuming too much RAM/system resources.

I agree with DenverD about something consuming your cpu time. When the system is frozen can you log in in another terminal? Try it. Press ctrl alt f1 at the same time . If it's possible the system is not locked. Now log in with the same user that is freezing in graphical mode and perform the top command. Investigate if something is consuming your cpu. If so press q. Write down the pid of the process blocking and kill it with the command kill -9 <the pid you wrote>. Switch again in graphical mode pressing ctrl alt f7. Tell us if this happens then we'll try to insulate the corrupting process

sometimes when firefox was running cpu went crazy..you must see where cpu is working, then we can say where's the problem. are you running 64 bit ?now i'm running 32 bit and it works good,my pc is quite old :-(

To me we cannot focus on Firefox until we don't have the output of top. Firefox solved a lot of memory problems and mine is running fine. And the problem appears not only running Firefox but even browsing file system under X! So let's fall back to text console and look what's happening from the outside.

Thanks a lot for your response, DenverD

I disabled Beagle. I do not know of this reiser file system, so I don't think I used, just default partitioning.

I did the fresh install, then took up the updates, then the nvidia driver (176.X.X.X) install. Everything seemed to be working fine.

I then configured samba and fstabbed three network shares.

I installed Thunderbird and moved my email over.

Then I started to notice the freeze-ups/lock-ups. It freezes for about fifteen seconds then returns. Or it lockups solid, and needs rebooting, or the applications start, but shut down without opening. But it is so eratic.

I printed out your list and gonna keep beside this workstation.

Hopefully it will narrow down what is happening here and resolve it.

I forgot to mention, while running top, I see that the cpu cranks up to 69% when I open/use firefox. It also cranks up to 62% when opening Thunderbird. Yast sucks up 23% upon opening, and cpu idles at 0.4%

I have KDE3.5 32bit OpenSUSE11

Sorry, Guys, but edit posts when I log out of the site, so here is my third in a row post.

You mentioned how full is my HD?

Well I clicked on "My Computer" on desk top to see how full, and my drive is not listed there. I went into the partitioner, and noticed that all the partitions are listed as RAID setups. I never set them up as raid, just default install.

so far so good!!

> I installed Thunderbird and moved my email over.

about how much time did things go good after successfully connecting
with the Window(tm) network until you installed Thunderbird?

how did you install Thunderbird? via YaST?

how long will it run without a problem if you boot and do NOT start
either thunderbird or firefox...

use konqueror for browser and just forget mail until we find the cause..

but, then it falls back down....leave top open on your desktop where you
can see it...and the instant you notice a freeze, look at top...what is
sucking THEN?

> You mentioned how full is my HD?

go to a terminal, type in

df -h and press enter

then, use your mouse to copy and paste it into your reply (using
konqueror to connect to the forum)

and, did you mention yet if you are using a USB wireless mouse, keyboard
or any other thing plugged into a usb socket? (i ask because,
well...just search these fora for threads with USB in the subject line
and you will see that LOTs of folks are having NEW problems with USB in
v 11.0 that they never had in 10.3 or before...so, there IS something
going on there...

good luck, keep smiling, have fun (and, tell me again...is this a dual
boot machine?)
