Thread: Wireless Broadband Card

  1. #1

    Default Wireless Broadband Card

Just installed OpenSuse 11 because I got fed up with lack of device support in SLED 10. Love this release so far, much faster, I have a 3d XGL desktop, etc. Nearly everything I need is working. However, my PC5750 EVDO card which used to work in SLED is not being recognized in OpenSuSE 11. After inserting the card, here's dmesg:

pccard: CardBus card inserted into slot 0

64 bit, on a Dell Lattitude D830 with 4Gb of memory. The card used to be recognized as a Pantech under SLED 10 SP2 64 bit. I updated the BIOS from A04 to A12, this did not make a difference.

What do 'lspci -v' and 'lspci -n' commands show about your device?

can you post the output from those commands, just to confirm ? also, have a peek at the stickies just at the start of the wireless section. they may help

so if you are connected by wired, do this in a terminal
    Code:
    sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware
then configure the device via YaST - network devices - network settings.

    Dear, rrawson,

    The problem is the line

USB HC takeover failed! (BIOS/SMM bug)

My PCMCIA device (in my case Sierra wireless Aircard 875, an UMTS modem, too) ceased to work when upgrading my memory from 2GB to 4GB.

You might temporarily reduce your system memory to 2 or 3GB and supposedly, your device should start to work.

All this is a bug in Dell's BIOS. I upgrade to rev. A13 of their BIOS, which fixed suspend-to-ram for 4GB, but the PCMCIA+4GB problem seems to be outstanding. I reported this one to Dell and hopefully I will get an answer within the next few days.

Maybe you should report your problem too, so they see that more people are suffering from it.

    Regards,

    Wolfgang

P.S.: In order to install a BIOS upgrade, proceed as follows: Burn BIOS update-exe to a CDROM, boot from Dell's freedos-CD, when in DOS cmdline, change the CD to the one with the BIOS update, type 'C:' and then '.\D830_A13.exe'.
