how come everytime i go to online updates in yast , suse 11 kde4, and check off the unneeded patches in the summary box to install and i hit accept, they dont install.. then the next time im in online updates they are still in the unneeded pathces section unchecked?

    thanks

YaST will not be inclined to use a patch on a package that isn't installed.

you do not need UN-needed patches..
they are patches for things you do NOT have installed..
and, you should NOT try to install them..

just ignore unneeded patches like you do the unneeded stuff on the
grocery store shelves when you shop..

but, if you meant to write uninstalled, but needed patches, that is
    another matter entirely..

    i'm with you there!!

well, if you go to YaST and see an unneeded patch for (say) chocolate
cake and WANT it...then just go to YaST > Software Management, and
search on "chocolate cake" and download ALL you can eat....they all cost
the same...and, then some unneeded chocolate cake patches will become
    needed and applied! !SHAZAM!

    have fun,

now i know. ....and now i know not to download chocolate cake patches from yast
i just thought it was like microsofts online update, high priority and software optional which both are installed and are updates for something ...

if the software is not on my system then you would think uneeded patches shouldnt be showing in the summary box? seems they shouldnt be showing up at all...

i agree, how did you determine they are unneeded?

i was belatedly asking how you knew the updates were unneeded in your
FIRST posting on the 5th, the one that began this thread..

i asked that because i (finally) looked at YaST > Online Update (in my
SuSE 10.3) and i see some that are labeled either "installed" OR
"installable"....that is, i don't see any labeled as "unneeded"..

perhaps you have the "Show Patch Category" selector (just below the list
window on the left/top) set to "All patches" and wonder why you haven't
yet installed all then listed....if so, i'd suggest you flip that
setting to "Installable Patches" which should (i think, and agree with
you) only show patches 'installable' (or usable) to YOUR machine
(because you don't need no stinkin' UNneeded patches)..

and, if you set the selector above that list window to "Patches" i think
yours will look more like mine (in that i do NOT see all the patches
which HAVE been installed, nor the ones i do not need to install)..

see if you like it that way, i do..

on my suse 11 kde4 i have 3 options in the show patch category, needed patches , uneeded patches, and all patches... in needed patches its empty because i already installed those updates.. if i choose uneeded patches i see a bunch of patches in the list labeled security, recommended and optional. if i set it to all pathces i see more patches some unchecked and some more with a black check marked box...
i just assumed all patches needed and those uneeded are necessary but not totally needed, well not as important.. but still they wont all install.. i tried setting the category to all patches but still wont install.. a total of 11 patches in uneeded and a total of 25 in all patches.. why wont they all install? anyway to copy and paste the lists to post here without typing them out
