Newbie : cc gcc not installed in Suse 11

Hi,
I installed Suse 11 gnome from Live CD. I wanted to do make of a utility. It failed saying cannot find cc or gcc or c++. I also tried to do a find I couldn’t find. Doens’t a typical install of OS install “cc”, “gcc” etc, or did I miss something?

Thanks!
Shiva

It does not. You can install all of these from YaST. There’s a whole pattern
for C/C++ Development you might want to have.

no, the ‘typical’ (default) SuSE install is a “desktop”…

yes…to get the development packages in addition to the default desktop
packages you have to (during install) pay attention to the page that
gives you the chance to customize the packages installed…and, just
click the box to load all the dev packages…

however, where you are now is not a disaster…

just go into YaST and click on “Software Management” then, after it has
initalized, type (one at a time) all the packs you want (as in cc, gcc,
and etc)…after going though those offered for cc (for example) and
clicking to put a check mark next to those you want DO NOT click
“Accept” yet…instead, do another search and place the check marks fpr
that package…

when finished selecting, THEN hit “accept” it will automatically
(usually) all dependencies and show you a list of what it has decided
you need IN ADDITION to what you picked…my advice is to agree…

an alternative is to just type dev in the search box the first time
and have a ball!! [big hard disk?]

but, doing that you are probably gonna have stuff you don’t need and
still miss stuff you do…my experience is the if you try to run
configure or make you will be told (with warnings and errors) the stuff
you need to go BACK to YaST and install…

have fun,

But I don’t have my internet connection ready, so software management tool doesn’t work. To make intenet work I need to build some packages. Is there any way, I can download any rpm and install the whole “cc” “gcc” etc?

I installed Suse using live CD. It didn’t ask for options to choose the packages.

You can download the RPM’s directly using the openSUSE Software search page.

are you saying that after a live CD install it is impossible for you to
connect to the internet?
what is missing that must be compiled to connect to the net?
are you sure it is not available from the CD?
do you know that the CD can be accessed by the YaST software tool?

there are lots of sources of the DVD…by mail, for example (i’ve never
used these folks so don’t take this as an endorsement or promise of
quality) but http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/products/linux/suse
offers the install DVD for 6 bucks (USD) plus postage…

where do you live? (there might be someone a half mile away with a disk
you can borrow! have a look at http://www.linux.org/groups/ )

good luck, and have fun…
