Default Can not change machine name

    openSUSE 11.0; KDE 3.5

The machine name I've chosen during install is not used by openSUSE. I've given it the name "iguana" (I know, its really original), and it displays "00173189e8e3" on the Kmenu, on the Control Center and even on the Konsole. In Yast2 the computer name is OK (iguana), and I've even modified it to another one but it keeps the same (the number sequence)...
Any ideas of how to get around this?

    Thanks, Victor.

There have been a couple threads in the network-internet forum recently
as I recall. Anyway, Yast: Network Devices: Network Card: <traditional
or network manager>: DNS and Host Names (or something like that) and
give it a name. Be sure to uncheck the option about changing your
    hostname via DHCP.

    Good luck.

Try changing the name in "/etc/HOSTNAME". I think this is one of those things that requires a restart. The file "/etc/hosts" also has that name associated to some address. But you can change that file anytime.

    Hope it helps.

Both files have "iguana" on them. What is really bizarre is that I can not find the number sequence on any of the "obvious places".

Thanks, it worked. The point was on the "Change hostname by DHCP". The "number sequence" finally was the MAC address... (well: newbie, newbie, newbie)
