Thread: Thunderbird Inbox corrupted, mail lost. HELP!

Default Thunderbird Inbox corrupted, mail lost. HELP!

    I upgraded from 10.3 to 11.

I copied the Inbox file (446MB) that I had backed up back into the relevant folder for the user. But when I open Thunderbird only the emails just downloaded from the mail server are displayed.

I know that the Inbox file is in the correct folder because after receiving a mail the date/time stamp for the Inbox changes to the current date & time. I have tried the following to retrieve the emails:

    1. Deleting the Inbox.msf file

    2. Rebuilding the index

    3. Compacting the Inbox (size changes from 446MB to 1.5MB)

    4. Disconnecting from the internet and doing all of the above.

Nothing seems to work. I cannot open the Inbox with Kwrite, clicking on the Inbox in Konqueror seems to freeze Konqueror.

Please can somebody help with any other suggestions?

You can probably still open individual emails (files) with Thunderbird. I have done it before and also replaced everything in Thunderbird with the back-up files.
I must say this is one of the many reasons to use internet based email (I use Google mail, but my provider also ha a good service).

Thanks for the reply, but how does one open the individual mails with Thunderbird?

Select a specific file and rightclick "open with" and search for Thunderbird.

Your comment implies that I just be seeing multiple files, but I only have the "Inbox" file. Is the same thing?

Quite possible he's using Maildir vs Mailbox format files. Don't worry.

Your files are likely VERY large text files, containing everything, right?

    Onwards!!

If you still have the original mail files, then it's possible to get them
    working with new thunderbird.

Start thunderbird, then close it. This should create the various (empty)
    files for your mailbox folders.

find the subdirectory where the NEW files have been created. looking for
    inbox, sent, etc.

delete ALL of the files in that subdir. including the *.db files and any
hidden files ('ls -a' will show any hidden files)

copy the old files into the directory. Of course, make sure they've got proper
owner and permissions if needed. (basically, don't leave them owned by root)

    start thunderbird

For each file you copied back, you should see a corresponding folder. Click
on each one, and since the *.db files don't exist, TB should reindex them.
It may take a few moments. be patient if you have (had?) zillions of emails
    stored.

Mostly, this trick works because you remove the index files Thunderbird uses
to do quick lookups. TB realizes they're missing, and recreates them. I
don't know why, but copying the OLD *.db files doesn't work. just copy over
    the 'data' files.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Guys,

Ok, I have tried both options. Open with TB and deleting all the files, replacing them with the old ones and still nothing.

    My Inbox is completely empty.

I use kmail rather than thunderbird but did have a similiar problem with kamil once on re-storing my email folders. To fix the problem I copied the back-up to the rigt folder and then updated the permissions - right click the (in your case) hidden /home file thunderbird.
