Question OpenSuSE 11 intall on Acer Aspire 8920

    Hey all;

I'm looking for some tips on installing version 11 on an Acer Aspire 8920. I've run into 2 problems.

Problem 1) The nic on the 8920 is not detected and setup.
    Details:
The NIC is a Attansic .. here are the lspci -v details:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Device 1026 (rev b0)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 0145
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 5
    Memory at f6000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
    I/O ports at 3000 [size=128]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [48] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [58] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [6c] Vital Product Data <?>
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting <?>
Capabilities: [180] Device Serial Number ff-d1-a0-00-6d-72-a6-ff

I've tried loading the atl2 driver package from the Build-Service but have had no luck. Any ideas?

Problem 2) The system appears to install fine, but when rebooted ... nothing blank text screen with cursor in corner.
    Details:
    The partition layout should be:
    /dev/sda1 50GB ext3 set to mount as /
    /dev/sda2 8GB swap
    /dev/sda3 (remaining disk space) ext3 /home
When booting the DVD in Rescue mode; I found that the installer had chosen to set the only partition as bootable to the swap !
A quick fdisk run took care of that. A Reboot told me that the boot flag was only part of the problem.
Still have a lovely blank text screen.<br>
The disk is a 320GB SATA.
    The controller is :
    00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 01 [AHCI 1.0])
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 0145
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 4345
    I/O ports at 18d8 [size=8]
    I/O ports at 18cc [size=4]
    I/O ports at 18d0 [size=8]
    I/O ports at 18c8 [size=4]
    I/O ports at 18e0 [size=32]
    Memory at fc304000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2K]
    Capabilities: [80] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit- Queue=0/2 Enable+
Capabilities: [70] Power Management version 3
    Capabilities: [a8] SATA HBA <?>
    Kernel driver in use: ahci
    Kernel modules: ahci

    Any suggestions ?

The nic problem I am not as concerned about as the boot problem.

The install seems to go fine, but on reboot, there is nothing.
    Prior to reboot:
/ is tagged as bootable and has type linux (83)

    After reboot:
/ is no longer tagged as bootable, it's type has changed to unknown.

    This is bizarre.

    Ok ..

Can someone tell me why the default grub location when installing to a blank SATA harddisk is not set to the MBR ?

The boot problem was that the grub loader was being installed to a partition other than the MBR ...

1 problem down ... one to go... onto the Nic Problem

I can answer the GRUB point but not the others. The MBR is too small to hold GRUB; so GRUB writes the location of GRUB - which must be within a certain limit of the start of the hard disk (I forget how much but enough to allow a sizeable Windows partition and for GRUB still to be on the first Linux partition) on the MBR and you normally see a message saying something like 'Loading GRUB stage 1.5' which is the stage which is written on your Linux partition and which you can edit from with Linux.

    Boot Problem:

The grub installation procedure used in the version 11 installer did not recognize that the disk was blank, and adjust the MBR accordingly. I had to go into the Grub options settings and select for it to setup the MBR.

    Nic Problem:

The Nic for the Acer Aspire 8920 apparently requires a driver; atl1e which was just posted to kernel 2.6.25.3 as a patch on June 26th.

When's the next "kernel" update for version 11 scheduled ?

Found a bug in the Yast Software Manager:
With no NIC defined; The Yast Software Manager on first launch automatically tries to contact
    http://download.opensuse.org/distrib.../repos/non-oss
Makes it a wee bit difficult to install the kernel source package and other dev rpms needed to apply the atl1e kernel driver patch , compile the module, insert the module, in order to get access to the network and download any OpenSuSE 11 updates...

    Nic now working:

I followed the how-to from the ubuntu folks at:

[ubuntu] 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Unknown device 1026 (rev b0) - Ubuntu Forums

The driver source file was from Asus but it does support the Nic on the Acer Aspire 8920.
The driver source is GPL'ed so it could be included in OpenSuSE via an external kernel rpm ("kpm packages I beleive they're called).

Any chances of getting this included in the default distro package set ?

Anyone know how to get OpenSuSE to recognize 1920 x 1080p ?
