    Default wine help?

calling all experienced Linux users! hehe
As my name implies, I am a Linux noob. In fact, this is my first post (yay me...)
I need help with Wine. I bought Unreal Tournament 2004 for Windows because back then, I didn't know about Linux.
Anyway, I just got OpenSUSE 11.0 (or whatever the newest released version is) and installed Wine with my initial installation. I need to know if it is possible to install UT2004 on Linux. I'm literally flat broke and I'm trying to avoid spending money on the newest, Linux-compatible version of the UT saga.
I've tried to install it using Wine, and it's successful until I have to insert CD2, then it won't unmount, so I manually eject the CD using a paper clip. Unfortunately, it refuses to mount the CD, so after a while of clicking "Continue" on the installer, I have to give up.
And then- only then- Linux mounts the CD.....
So, uh, can someone help me out?...
As I've stated, I'm a noob, so don't flame me.
But I know you're all too nice to flame people.

    Hi Linux_noob,

I own ut2004, but the DVD version; and it contains installers for both windows and linux - natively in linux, without the need for wine. However if your CD1 truly does not have the linux installer, then look at the second post here:

    UT2004 linux-installer.sh Don't Gots. - Ubuntu Forums

The install file is called 'linux-installer.sh' and is ~24MB, I think. Use that instead of wine.

    As for mounting/unmounting discs:

as root, type in 'eject'. That should almost always get your CD out.

    Good luck,
    g

UT2004 is definitely a nice game on Linux. The installer is on both the CD and DVD versions. I have the CD version, so I know. Replace the directory info with wherever it's mounted. Make sure nothing is in the directory, or it won't be able to unmount when it asks for the next disk.

    sudo sh /directory/of/disk/linux-installer.sh

    CaptSilverFox
    OpenSuse 11

Yeah, installing anything multi-cd in wine has always been a pain. But UT2004 has always come with a linux installer on cd1 and I've been using that to install. Works fine for all the distros I have tried.

as others have said, there is no need to use WINE to play this AWESOME game so that's a godsend - HOWEVER, UT3 DOES NOT have a linux installer (something to do with the engine being baught up by Microshaft, I mean microsoft

very sad as I played this (UT3) on a friend's windows pc and it is truly wonderful.

Just on a side note, if you're having trouble with games under wine, check out their website Wine HQ there is a comprehensive DB of titles and how-to's to help you with WINE and games

ps, what's your ut2004 player name? i still enjoy a good blast and can add you as a buddy, my ut2004 name is badger_fruit

Don't worry! The linux port is coming soon and the installer will be available for download.

I remember in an interview with Epic a while back, the person said that the linux and mac ports are now just a hobby at best. If it happens it happens, but don't really count on it.
Anyway, to eject cd's with wine, don't run the installer from the directory. Instead run it with full path name from elsewhere.
So instead of "cd /path/to/ -> wine installer.exe"; do "wine /path/to/installer.exe"

Newer packaged version (the bonus ed version) no longer contain
the ability to install under Linux.. just fyi. You'll want to
get an older one so you can get the installer.

Which is nice... but Epic (whoever) is no friend of Linux...

Actually Epic and id are pretty much the only companies porting their new games to Linux, so they are Linux friendly.
