Novell doesn't intend this to be anything since this is not a Novell run
site. This is an openSUSE community run site so the look and feel is
determined by what the users want, not what Novell the company wants.

As for the mailing-lists, I believe FeatherMonkey was referring to
http://en.opensuse.org/Mailinglists and not NNTP though he might need to
    clarify if I am incorrect.

Well you took that a bit far but yes I agree they crushed two very distinct methods of communications together and hoped they could work together.

Not sure either side is more dominant than another, but also not sure either side is happy with the other view point.

Mailing lists do still exist and you have the nntp access to here. openSUSE Mailinglist Archives: opensuse - by thread

Web based forums will tend to attract new users who need a friendly environment, and perhaps that means less helpful for you. Technical tends to be unfriendly, but productive and quick to get to results.

Now I would never dream of pointing a new user to a mailing list.
Man first, have a try at Info, have a look at Wiki, if all that fails Scroogle!!!!!
If I've helped click on the Rep button I don't know what it does but it sounds cool.

I actually think this thread is really strange we have both extremes this thread begins

lost personality and become all cold and corporate style

    and ends

Novell intends this to be just another social networking site

You would hope there would be some middle ground a little compromise.

Think it was mentioned earlier its character has yet to be determined yet we have two different characters being bandied about. But from the opposite extremes, shame it wasn't the other way around then perhaps people would be happy.

Use a newsreader and you can eliminate that distraction.

I defintly agree that this form feels to straight forward and plain. i almost feel intimidated. the only reason i have an account is 1. the obvious they no longer allow posting on the old sites
and 2. i know that the community i came from will be forced to come here for help, support or chit chat to.

i miss the nice clean and sleek look of the green eye candy.

In the old SLS forums one of the members whose location was listed as "the
Wilds of Arkansas" used to occasionally give us the account of a trip to
his local Possum Blight General Store (Possum Blight being the name of the
fictional small, backwoods, and maybe backwards community) and the goings
on around the pot bellied stove there or the minutes of the Possum Blight
Linux User Group meetings that were held there. These accounts were usually
to teach in a humorous way or get some point across or sometimes merely to
exercise his creative writing skills. You would probably need to search the
SLS archives to find reference to it. I was using it merely as an opposing
illustration to a large "super-store" such as Wal-Mart. Sorry if it
    confused you.

I've just come across this thread, after returning from a catastrophic DSL failure! One of the problems of living in the Wilds of Somerset - almost as bad as the "Wilds of Arkansas"!!

I too think the forum is a bit cold right now, but I think it's because it's so new. It's like moving house. We've all got to make new friends again.

Anyway, here are some of the things I miss:

    (1) MattB

    (2) The Welcome Screen - yes I know I can change the "skin" later, but I'm still faced with the "corporate" front page which sets the mood for the rest of the session.

    (3) Not knowing who people are! Many of us had to change our names to a greater or lesser extent, and I miss the relationships that had built up. When responding, or reading a response, we are all tending to tread carefully because we don't know how the other person will react. What about everyone who had to change their name adding an "aka" signature to their posts?

    (4) The loss of amusing "experience indicators" (e.g Parent Penguin, Kernel Hacker, etc). Most of us became "Junior Members" again in the new forum....which brings me on to point 5

    (5) "Junior Member", "Senior Member" etc is SO dry and corporate. Let's get the humour back!

Just a few of my personal feelings, for what they're worth.

No doubt. Other than the group names, everything looks the same to me,
    thanks to NNTP!
