Unhappy Google Earth hangs at splash screen

    Hi there!

The title says it all: when I run Google Earth, installed with Google's binary, it hangs at splash screen and then dies after some time. Is there a way to fix this?

    Tech stuff:

    • openSUSE 11.0 with KDE 3.5
    • ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with ATI drivers from SUSE repos
    • fgrlxinfo gives me:

    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9700 Series
    OpenGL version string: 2.1.7537 Release
Also (maybe related): when I run stellarium 0.9.1 (uses QT4 and OpenGL) my whole screen goes white: only commands at bottom are visible.

I have similar problems with Stellarium and Google Earth. I'm using ASUS
laptop with ATI Radeon Xpress 200M and PC with ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO.

OS is openSUSE 11.0, KDE 3.5.9, ATI drivers from ATI repos for oS 11.0
    (http://www2.ati.com/suse/11.0).

It is a known fact. Google earth does not work on openSuSE 11.0 (for now). Be patient and use Google maps instead (small difference).

Firefox has a number of add-ons for Google maps.

I installed googleearth yesterday on openSUSE 11.0, KDE 3.59. It appears to
work fine. He the result of help on the googleearth menu:

    Google Earth 4.2.0205.5730
    Build Date Nov 13 2007
    Build Time 17:50:46
    Renderer OpenGL
    Operating System Linux (2.6.25.5)
    Video Driver NVIDIA Corporation
    Max Texture Size 4096x4096
    Server kh.google.com
    User
    License Key

    I have an:
    Nvidia FX5200 card
    ASUS P4 motherboard
    2GB memory.

Note I installed 4.2 then when it said update available I said yes. Tried
latest version first but it said mac so I was not sure about using it since
    it was a beta.

    Thanks !

It put me on the right track.

I installed 4.2 and got the message that googleearth was already running.... (not true as Ctrl+Esc told me).

But I also got the message that I needed to kill: instance-running-lock

I went to ~/home/myname/.googleearth and deleted the folder "instance-running-lock".
Next started 4.2 and I was told there was a new version (duhhh) 4.3, I clicked to install that and Google-Earth is now running as normal as can be !

I've also succeded in running Google Earth by installing version 4.2.

Another thing: I now have stellarium running as well! I've installed the development version (stellarium 0.10.0 via SVN) and it works like a charm. Some stuff is missing, but it doesn't crash (as far as I've used it) and the rendering is very smooth.

Very simple (and acurate) instructions to install stellarium via SVN can be found here.

    Happy star hunting

urns out that it was an upgrade in the 4.2.x series not to 4.3 that still does not work.
