Thread: OpenSUSE11-DNS settings do not get saved with NetworkManager

    Default OpenSUSE11-DNS settings do not get saved with NetworkManager

    Under YaST Control Center->Network Settings->Global Options, if "User Controlled with Network Manager" option is chosen, the DNS configuration under the Hostname/DNS does not get saved into /etc/resolv.conf.

    If "Tradition Method with ifup" is selected instead, the DNS configuration will get saved into /etc/resolv.conf.

    Any advice on getting DNS configuration to be saved with the "User Controlled with Network Manager" option selected? Or is there a way to have the Network Manager applet in the gnome panel with "Traditional Method with ifup" option? Thats because my VPN client is under a tab in Network Manager.

    Thanks!

    My desktop at work is using Traditional (SLED 10 SP1) and I believe the
    Network Manager is still there as I use it for VPN access to various
    places. Unless this has changed in 11 I would think it should still work.

    Good luck.

    I have the same problem. Can't save the DNS information.
    "/etc/resolv.conf" is cleared and I had to edited it manually.

    Today when I started my computer, the "resolv.conf" was empty again.

    I just completed a fresh install of version 11, and experience the same problem; DNS settings in YaST are not being saved. I did turn-off ipv6 just in case. Also, the original downloads / updates did work. But now, nothing??

    Suggestions?

    Thank you in advance,
    Ralph

    these bugs could be related:

    https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=395555
    https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=402934

    Other than that I don't have any issues using NetworkManager or ifup.
    My install was done with the beta3 and updated to the current final version. Could be there is a difference there.
    Have a lot of fun!

    I found this fix, which worked;

    ..."Mike, you're not kidding! I started up the YaST Network Manager, clicked the Global Options tab, switched the Network Setup Method from "User Controlled with NetworkManager" to "Traditional Method with ifup," clicked Finish, ran ifdown ath0 followed by ifup ath0 at the command line, and voila - it's working! How ridiculous. Thank you!"

    Hi there;
    Me too. Meaning that I do experience the same problem. I am running ver. 11.0 installed from a live CD but, maybe under slightly different circumstances: I'm not using DHCP but fixed IPś. Out of curiosity I searched for the ifupdown programme as referred to in a previous thread but, I could NOT find it anywhere on the installed OS.
    Thanks to all for sharing.

    I think they are referring to ' ifconfig <interface name> down / up '.
    But this is not needed as YaST stops and starts the networking service when changing the settings. Also just bringing down the interface (and back up again) will not renew dhcp settings (and thus refresh dns settings).

    If you want to restart the network services for some reason, open a terminal, enter ' su - <enter> ' followed by the root password and enter ' rcnetwork restart ' or ' service network restart ' .
    Have a lot of fun!
