Default openSUSE 10.3 freezes (no newbie)

    Hello,

since a regular update my system locks up randomly. The caps/lock led flashes up and shifting caps/lock or toggling into console becomes impossible.

Neither checking of ./~xsession-errors, /var/log/messages and dmesg nor logging stalling sessions via top and mpstat gave any useful clue about the culprit. However Firefox and wine (both several releases checked) seem to lead into lock ups while leaving the laptop idle does not.

    My system is:

    uname -a
    Linux linux 2.6.22.18-0.2-default #1 SMP 2008-06-09 13:53:20 +0200 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

    X -version
    X Window System Version 7.2.0
Release Date: Tue Jun 3 00:09:04 UTC 2008
    X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.2
Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX

    KDE 3.57

It's a HP Compaq nx6325 and I had a lot of problems, but actually none were as severe as this. The CPU is an amd64 Turion with ati chipset and graphics card.

I checked booting with maxcpus=0 and uninstalling the fglrx driver, but both seem to be unrelated to the failure. beagle was uninstalled long ago.

    The changed packets are:

    manually:
    fglrx_7_1_0_SUSE103-8.501-1.i386.rpm

How may I find the point of failure and fix it? I assume it's something related to X or the keyboard driver.

    THX

Default Re: openSUSE 10.3 freezes (no newbie)

After downgrading xorg-x11-libs and the kernel I finally found the error:

    /var/log/messages
Jun 22 00:22:09 linux kernel: REISERFS: panic (device Null superblock): vs-6030: check_internal_block_head: invalid item number level=2, nr_items=179, free_space=65304 rdkey

A few days ago I unintentionally rsync'ed a folder with itself. This probably damaged the encrypted reiserfs home directory. Doing an overnight reiserfsck --rebuild-tree solved the issue. The kernel does not lock up anymore.

The only remaining questions are why 2.6.22.18-0.2-default does not log the error when 2.6.22.5-31-vanilla does and how a broken file system can cause a kernel panic.
