hi all, i’m a newbie here with opensuse ^^…
i want to ask, what will happen if 64-bit pc installed with 32-bit opensuse 11? does it have different if i installed it with 64-bit opensuse??
and, how do i know if my pc is 32-bit or 64-bit? thanks a lot. have a nice day ^^.
and I can’t delete file from my another partition, it says access denied… what should i do? or do i have the wrong mount path?
FYI i created mount path of my another partition in /media/data…
It depends on your Hardware. If you have a Multicore PC it is most likely 64 bit. As well when you have a Athlon 64.
Genenerally if you use the DVD it only offers you the choice of 64bit if your hardware is capable of 64 bit.
64bit is more capable but not as stable yet then 32bit. But you can easily use 32bit in a 64bit PC.
The only major difficulty i know in 64bit is Firefox and Java not liking each other. Should be solved soon though with the new java 1.7 (iced tea)

If you download the media it installs whatever you download on a 64 bit
computer. So if you downloaded 32 bit it will install only 32 bit. If
you have a 32 bit box you will not be able to install 64 bit.
Now if you purchased te media, the dvd has both and you can choose what
version you want to install.

IIRC flash is an issue too.
err… so 32-bit dvd can’t be installed to 64-pc? but, when I wanted to download opensuse 11, there was a comment that said 32-bit dvd will work in 64-pc…

You can’t use the java plugin in 64-bit, also I see how people get the idea that 32-bit + 32-bit = 64-bit, it’s a completely different architecture
If this is your first time installing linux, use 32-bit, the second time too, then on the third time, if you have a 64-bit machine, use 64-bit

You can install a 32-bit OS on an x86_64 system (Athlon 64, Opteron,
Xeon, etc.) and it will just run as a 32-bit system. The only
difference is you have the 32-bit limitations. Personally I’d go with
64-bit and recommend others do so as well, but it’s your choice. If you
don’t have > 3.5 GB RAM you may not benefit much as a normal computer
user but if you plan on pushing your system much or want to virtualize a
64-bit system you must have a 64-bit host.

I have had both 32 and 64 bit openSuSE running on an AMD Athlon 64.
A few years back 64 bit wasn’t all that stable and there were issues with a number of progs. The past 1,5 - 2 years its no problem at all.
openSuSE used to ask if you really wanted to install a 32 bit operating sys on a 64 bit machine before installing. My advise is to take the 64 bit option.
The access denied is due to permissions see ‘chmod --help’.
