I would like to access my home PC running OpenSUSE 10.3 from my work. At work I have only HyperTerminal installed.
I would like to get terminal access to my PC using rsh. (Yes, I know the security concerns, but I am not allowed to install any ssh compatible terminal at work).
Can anyone give me some tips how to do this?
(I can start rshd as a service, I can configure the firewall etc. but I would like to know if there is anything else I have to do?)
A side question: Is there any better way to connect to Linux form Windows? For example, can I use Windows remote administration for graphical access?
You could access your home computer with VNC which is simple to setup in
suse via Yast. You could also install something like FreeNX and get an
RDP option so you could use microsoft’s terminal services client (mstsc)
and I would probably go with something GUI-ish if you really can’t use
any encryption.
You really can’t even get putty.exe and drop it somewhere on your box?
It doesn’t need to be installed… just ‘run’, and it will do a fine job
with all those various protocols. If you use something unencrypted, and
since you’ll be leaving a port wide open in any case, you will likely be
found by somebody with malicious intentions before too long.

If connecting to your home machine is needed / useful for your job, then talk to your IT department and convince them that there is a far, far lower security risk to the company to let you use a ssh client to do this.
If this is something for break time, again, ask the IT department again to be able to use an ssh client. Otherwise just wait until you get home or call in sick if you really need to do something at home. Or be willing to accept termination of employment for cause as a consequence of circumventing company policy in a manner that opens the company’s IT infrastructure to great risk.
