Statistical Analysis software

i am a student using minitab for statistical analysis. i have checked around and found a few programs for similar use:
gretl
MacAnova
GNU PSPP
and others. does anyone have experience with minitab that can suggest one of these that works similar? or is there one of these (or other) that may be better?

For serious, professional statistical analysis STATA is the thing for
Linux. Or SPSS, if point-and-click comes before richness of
statistical methods. None of these are Open-source or free of charge.
If you need that, have a look at R to see if you are able to master
the particular way it works (i'd say, look at R anyway).

I second that. For statistical analysis R is without doubt the best program for the job and it runs perfectly under Linux. I usually compile from source (which with the use of the online manual is a piece of cake)

thanks for your comments. i did see R as another possibility. my main concern is a learning curve. i want something that will be easy to learn, a decent GUI would be nice. i will check it out and return with a report.

I'm also looking into getting some stats software. Having checked, PSPP says it's free? Which version do I download and do I have to compile it for it to work?

PSPP comes with a one-click install now for 11.2

Loads beautifully and I'm impressed on initial looks. I still would like to use Minitab but PSPP is worth an investigation, especially before you resort to a VirtualBox *** Minitab on Winduhs.

have you used SPSS? that is what i am having to use now. if you have, is PSPP the opensource version of SPSS?
