lspci not needed for usb card, but lsusb shows device is there. this seems to be in a laptop? lspci showed an internal card (i think)?

anyway, i am a little fan of ndiswrapper and have no experience with mad wifi, so you could go the ndiswrapper route if you want to?

did the usb wireless device come with a cd for windows with all the drivers on it?

if it is a laptop, why not get the internal card working? iwconfig shows it is picking up a signal, although i can’t tell if this is your usb device. is the usb device set up in yast already? if so, you may have problem with network manager. get a cabled connection and install wifi-radar, it’s good (in my opinion) with wireless devices.

yeah, it is a laptop, and the card came internally with all the windows(Vista unfortunately, I got it in the April of last year.) I tried it with the cable, and I do have the ethernet card also naturally, and I was able to configure the working for that. However my modem/router are connected to my desktop most of the time. I tried wifi radar, and it picked up nothing. Either, I didn’t know how to use it properly or it just didn’t ack the signals. I’ve tried a lotta things over the last couple of days but nothing’s seemed to work, and it just a bit frustrating :(. However, on windows(I have both xp and vista on my laptop) the wlan is working perfectly. Thanks a lot for the help. I would like to know whther it has anything to with the RT73, and if there’s anything I need to get for that. If not what else ??? Thanks again.:):o

well it depends on whether you want to get the external usb wireless adapter working or the internal card working? reason why nothing picks up signal is because card is not configured yet, or at least not with correct driver. did your usb card come with an install cd for windows? if so, it would be good if you could get that, since you can use these windows drivers and use ndiswrapper to get it configured properly.

suse should have detected the internal card on installing it (the OS i mean, not the card). in yast>network devices>network card is it not listed there? lspci suggested it might be…?

Well I’ve checked up network devices in yast, and done all the dns and gateway changes exactly as it is on windows on my notebook, and while using the cable, made it as it is on my desktop(which worked). However, I don’t have an external usb card, its an internal one, even though its listed as an usb. Ya, so definitely it detects that(I have 1 wireless card and 1 ethernet card in the network devices), and that’s where I made the changes. For ndiswrapper, I found RT73.sys on windows but couldn’t find an inf file. I got the home recovery cd along with the notebook, in case vista crashes…will that do ??? Or anything else ?

when you said usb card i assumed you meant one you had paid for seperately from a shop, not an internal card. so we have an internal card we are trying to fix, which you want to set to dhcp. you are using suse 10.3. go into yast>network devices>network card and your card is listed there (the wireless card this is), correct? what encryption method are you using?

could you post a few command results for me, first su to root in a console:

ifconfig
iwconfig
iwlist scan

am i correct in saying that earlier you said any program you try and use does not pick any network up? is the network a hidden ESSID, or normal? under the hardware tab in your network card what is given for module name? this will be your driver.

i don’t understand what you mean by internal usb card still… do you plug it into a usb port? as if it’s internal, then it’s not a usb card is it…? it would be pci/pcmcia.

if you can answer some of these questions should make it a bit easier to try and help you.

cheers.

edit: have seen you posted iwconfig, it seems it is not associating with a wireless network, but it has recognised it can detect wireless networks if that makes sense? in yast have you added your network ESSID name and encryption method? it says encryption off in iwconfig

ya sure I’ll paste them right away:

wlan0 Interface doesn’t support scanning : Network is down

Well, I don’t plug it into a usb port, but its listed as a usb in the ‘lsusb’ and even in the network card section, in the hardware section its given as RT73usb, so am guessing its some kinda internal usb ??? my network ESSID name is UTStarcom and there’s no encryption it says from 192.168.1.1…If there’s anything else please tell me, as am very confused myself…Thanks so much.

I have a Ralink RT61 cardbus card attached to my laptop and all I had to do to get it running was to copy the missing firmware files to /lib/firmware. Besides of that everything should work out of the box - the rt2x00 driver is part of openSUSE 10.3.
Grab the firmware here Ralink Technology: Linux

Do I just extract the files and copy them to the folder ??? Or is there something else I have to do ???

No, just copy the files over to /lib/firmware and reload the kernel module (or reboot). Afterwards your wireless network should show up in network manager and you should be able to connect.
At least with the RT61 based wireless cards it works that way and I’m pretty sure the same applies for RT73 as well.

Well I copied the files after extraction, and then without it also, but nothing seems to work. Am assuming am doing something wrong…so is there anything else ???

I’m sorry, if that doesn’t work, I have no clue! You have reloaded the kernel module (or rebooted) after copying the firmware over to /lib/firmware? That’s essential for getting it to work!

Anyone else? Other suggestions?

Yes finally it works…woo hoo…:D… I just looked round on the internet and I found a site where he asked to just extract the rt73.bin file to the firmware folder and then asked me to reload the rt73usb driver through the rmmod and modprobe commands…Thanks a lot for all the help neways guys :D…thnx…

That’s exactely what I was talking about. Glad that it works for you finally!

Have a lot of fun!

Where did you find the info on how to rmmod & modprobe the rt73 driver?
