Default some noobie help with wireless

Hey yall I just installed my first linux system and am having a little trouble with it (though it still beats windows) my wireless does not work even though when I look in my network settings it tells the make and model of my wireless card (BCM4318 [Airforce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller). What am i missing? Also when I try to sign onto IRC Chat it wont let me saying that a program is trying to start. When I give it permission to start it still does not start. Do I need to go and download more stuff for all this to work?

I am sorry for all the noob questions but I am just starting out on linux and would really like to be Bill Gates free.

Thank you for all your time

It is likely that you need to install the firmware. Check the output of
'dmesg' to see what problems it reveals.

Sorry that I didn't post this where it was supposed to be. I went back and searched for that welcome notice but could not find it. If at all possible when you get the chance if you could point at it I would be eternally gratefull

As far as the firmware goes, if you could point out where I can get that. I am a noob and have no idea as to what specific firmware that I am getting for what hardware, or where to download it from. I am assuming that you mean the firmware for the wireless card, but I dont know where to get that from. If you could point it out that would be awesome.

Also I am not very familiar with the lingo of opensuse or even linux for that matter so you might have be somewhat thorough when explaining.

Again sorry for all the noob stuff, but I gotta start somewhere

If you google "Broadcom wireless firmware", the first entry is to
    http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43, which contains all the
information you need. If you copy the scripts from the web page, and paste
them into a terminal, everything will be done for you as long as you have a
working internet connection. This step is nearly independent of distro and
should work for everyone. Your other option is to see if your distro has some
special sequence, you can always use it.

We all had to start at the beginning.
