GoogleEarth works perfectly for me on SLED 11 x86_64, which is based on
OpenSUSE 11.1. I installed it just a week or so ago (previously had
version 4, now version 5) and it ran out of the box nicely.
64-bit Java also works for me, again on SLED. My wife runs 64-bit
OpenSUSE 11.1 on her box and it seems to be fine as well (not sure how
much she uses Java, really, but oh well).
Regarding "Internet Banking" I do not see how that is relevant. I've done
banking on multiple bank/credit union sites for years and never had a
problem at all. Websites use fairly standardized technologies ((X)HTML,
XML, CSS, ECMAScript/JavaScript, etc.) so all platforms should be fine.
In my own experience I use FireFox primarily and it has yet to find a site
it can't load properly unless it is laden with poo (ActiveX or similar)
and I really haven't even had that problem lately as standards-compliant
versions of most sites seem to be the norm these days.
If you have specific examples of issues you have seen, applications that
have failed, or things like that please post them but otherwise this does
not appear to be something specific enough for help.
Good luck.

heh! who told you that you must use Ubuntu if you wanna run Google
Earth? i've been using it on Linux for YEARS!

heh! your name means to me that you might live in Scandinavia--an
otherwise GREAT area but unfortunate part of the world for banks
because they seem to have almost ALL elected to use Linux hostile java
apps...[it is almost like one guy figured out how to build a bank web
presence and then SOLD that way to every bank in Scandinavia...almost
every bank! sad indeed!]
but, i contacted my local Linux User Group and found a bank which had
a netbank usable by more than just M$ users (and, jumped from Den
Dansk Bank to Sydbank, in Denmark--problem solved!! AND they have
lower service charges)
try it yourself: http://www.linux.org/groups/

the best thing that M$ runs out of the box is viruses, malware,
keyloggers, botnets and etc...
i save SO much time not buying, installing, tuning etc all the fences
and stuff required to not become a part of an M$ botnet, that i have
PLENTY of time to solve my own piddly little problems, and help others
once in a while also..
