I decided that I might create my very first blog entry here in the openSUSE forum. I have never blogged about anything before and really have not seen the benefit in using a blog. But, perhaps some social redeeming value might exist in blogging, so I decided to see just what that might be. So, I would like to ask anyone that might read my blog here today. Why are you using the openSUSE forums? What has brought you here to my neck of the woods? Now before you answer that question, let me throw out the top six possibilities, in my very humble opinion.
- To find help for a problem using openSUSE.
- To see what others are really doing with openSUSE.
- To socialize with others who use openSUSE.
- To help others who use openSUSE.
- To feel good about your choice in using openSUSE.
- To Increase your knowledge on using openSUSE and Linux.
Now there are other ulterior motives for being here I’m sure, but I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and feel your reasons for being here are good and honest. There could be a few more reasons added such as mildly tooting your own horn perhaps, but not too much, but this may come under feeling good about your choice of using openSUSE perhaps. I can without a doubt say that helping others to use openSUSE really helps yourself, by getting you out of your Linux comfort zone. That causes you to do and try things you might not otherwise try, thus increasing your knowledge about using Linux and openSUSE. I would like to add that is seems that the very first version of Linux that you get to work properly for you seems to become your real home, which you will come back to time and time again.
I have been a SuSE user ever since version 10.0 came out in 2005 when I was first able to boot SuSE Linux from an external USB hard drive, connected to my work Dell laptop, without placing or modifying any files on my work PC. It was a goal that I worked on for weeks while stuck working out of town in a hotel room. I had many failures, which required me to restore my Windows XP copy over and over. But finally, success and it was so sweet. But that was some six years ago, what the heck have I been doing with openSUSE since then? Well the answer at first was not too much and mainly when stuck out of town, I would pull out my oddity and boot into openSUSE. Then, 10.1 came out, I even purchased a boxed copy and I got more excited and started working with it more and more, but then apathy. I did get excited around openSUSE version 11.0 and purchased yet another boxed copy, but I seemed to have the same apathy come back again.
Fast forward to openSUSE 11.2 and the date of March 13, 2010 when I decided to join the openSUSE forum. Now consider I might have been a member here in the past, but just a lurker most often. Not a real helper as it where. That is when I decided to ask myself, why do I use openSUSE and why am I in the openSUSE forum? Then, my answer was clear and in two parts. First, to help other openSUSE users all that I can AND second, to learn all I can about using openSUSE by helping others. It is my mandate and it has proven without a doubt to have increased my knowledge about using openSUSE. So far it has been a success for me, but I have determined I have so much further to go. But then, my journey is not complete and I am not at the end of the trail. I have more people to help and more things to learn about using openSUSE.
OK, I know that sounds pretty corny for sure. AND, I really like that thank you I get when you really figure out someone’s problem. So, that is my reason, but really, why are you here? And indeed, I ask you the very same question. Why are you here, in the openSUSE forum reading my blog today (or what ever day it might be)?
