Setting up in openSUSE a network scanner from an HP all-in-one-printer-scanner

I recently setup in openSUSE-12.1 the network scanner functionality that comes with my HP-C309a all-in-one printer/scanner :

The first thing I always do is setup this ‘all-in-one-printer/scanner’ as a printer as documented in this previous blog entry: Connecting openSUSE to an HP wireless printer - Blogs - openSUSE Forums I discovered that if I use the ‘hplip’ setup when configuring the print functionality in my ‘all-in-one-printer’, then it is much easier to subsequently setup the scanner functionality in the same device.

So with the printer configured, I then go to YaST > Hardware Scanner and select scanner

YaST then starts searching for a connected active scanner, which also includes looking at any configured printer to see if it also has a scanning capability.

In my case, it detects my HP C309a Network scanner. But note it is NOT CONFIGURED.

So I then select EDIT to configure this scanner. Note if there was no Scanner Detected, I would have had to select ‘Other’ (right corner of above image) to detect/configure the network scanner.

After selecting EDIT, the YaST2 “Scanner Model and Driver Selection” dialogue appears

and in that above image my HP C309a network scanner can be seen. I select that and then select ‘Next’

YaST then adds that scanner to its scanner list, and my HP network scanner is configured ! … I select ‘OK’ and thats all !

Once the scanner is set up then I find network scanning with my HP C309a works well. Except, how to use the network scanner ?

**
Scanning Application xsane
**

Well, for scanning, I use the basic program xsane. After placing the document I wished scanned on the HP C309a’s scanning window, I can run ‘xsane’ by typing in a terminal :

xsane

and in the application window(s) that appears press ‘acquire preview’ :

[click on image above for larger image]

On my openSUSE-12.1 I then receive this notification in the lower right hand corner of my KDE4 desktop that the network preview scanning has commenced:

… continued in next post …

After the image preview from xsane is in place, I note and select the ‘dashed lines’ in the preview window and move them around the image that I want scanned, making them as close as possible (so not to scan anything that I do not want). In my example, I left them a bit off of the image to make them clearer to see in this example, but in practise I would move them closer.

[click on image above for larger image]

Then I move to the xsane window and press ‘Scan’ :

[click on image above for larger image]

And I see this as feedback that the network scanning is taking place ( ‘receiving RGB data’ ) , plus I obtain a notification in the lower right corner of my KD4E desktop (similar to what I noted in the previous post wrt the scanning-preview KDE advisory).

[click on image above for larger image]

Then a viewer pops up, and I am given the opportunity to save the scanned image in a variety of formats. I typically choose the ‘jpeg’ format.

And its that simple.

Good luck in your efforts Network scanning with openSUSE and your HP device.

PLEASE, if you run into difficult, please start a NEW thread in our openSUSE forums.

Great step by step guide on connecting HP C309a? Thanks!

Great guide. Must say, my Deskjet F4500 was even simpler: I found the device’s IP in my routerinterface ran “su -c hp-setup”, entered the found IP in Manual Discovery, clicked Next, named it to my convenience, and that was the install. In HP-toolbox I changed the xsane command to skanlite, which I prefer, and skanlite worked out of the box. I have to install a couple of HP’s from the C3XX series next week, I’ll follow this guide.

@oldcpu.

Great work you have done here

I have set up an HP Photosmart C4380 printer here.
It is printing ok, and I want it to be able to scan also.

I went through your info, but I get the followin info:

“hpaio No scanner recognized by this device”

Why can’t it not see the printer’s scanner as it can fine see the printer itself ?

Hi erikja,

According to this the C4380 is supported for scanning in openSUSE-12.1
HP Linux Imaging and Printing

But I can not tell which if my suggestions you followed, and which you did not. Saying you ‘went’ through, but not saying exactly what you did do, and did not do, and then give an error is not enough for me, at my knowledge level, to help you. You need to provide more details.

For example, what version of hplip do you have installed ? Are you a gnome or kde or lxde user ?

Note I stated

The first thing I always do is setup this ‘all-in-one-printer/scanner’ as a printer as documented in this previous blog entry: Connecting openSUSE to an HP wireless printer - Blogs - openSUSE Forums I discovered that if I use the ‘hplip’ setup when configuring the print functionality in my ‘all-in-one-printer’, then it is much easier to subsequently setup the scanner functionality in the same device.

If you did not follow that other blog, and you setup your printer different, they you are in my view wasting your time trying to follow my blog. You need to setup your printer the way I set it up, as that will use hplip to configure things (where hplip is called by YaST).

Also, I recommend you go to a forum thread to get help, and not try to do this on a blog entry. I obtain superior notification of any post a user makes in a forum thread and get NONE when a user posts on a blog thread. Also, other people will be able to help as well much easier if you post on a regular forum thread. This making it easier for others to contribute is important, as my day job has me incredibly busy currently, and currently I am only rarely visiting the forum. It will be like this for another 6-months for me.
