oldcpu's meandering thoughts on Computers, GNU/Linux and openSUSE

  1. Reboot (once) to selected different Grub2 boot partitions. Also label/reorder partitions in Grub2

When updating my 89-year old mother's PC, I found it very useful to be able to reboot (one time only) from one boot partition direct to another partition on her PC.

    Why ?

I live in Europe, and my mother lives in North America. I find this is very useful when I am accessing her PC remotely (from Europe, when her PC is in North America), and I need to access a different partition on her PC, and I do not want to ask her to reboot the PC.

    To perform the reboot, ...

  2. Recovering a /home partition with fsck 7000km away

I had an interesting experience today with my +88-year-old mother's computer (running openSUSE-13.1), which is a continent away. After returning from an out-of-country business trip late in the evening the previous night, I woke up this morning to find out that I had received an SMS and email from my sister, who lives in same city as my mother, that my mother's GNU/Linux computer had major problems and was refusing to boot. My sister sent me this picture of the boot screen:

  3. Foscam FI9831W IP-Camera with openSUSE-13.1

by , 24-Aug-2014 at 05:13 (oldcpu's meandering thoughts on Computers, GNU/Linux and openSUSE)
    .
This blog entry describes some of my early openSUSE-13.1 experiences with a Foscam FI9831W IP-Camera using openSUSE-13.1. First let me say this IP-Camera works well with my Android device (and WinXP under Virtual Box), albeit I don't yet have full native openSUSE GNU/Linux functionality.

One thing to note in general about most (all ?? ) IP-Camera(s), is they have in fact computers embedded inside, which run the GNU/Linux operating system, where that GNU/Linux is not observable ...

  4. liveKDE 64-bit openSUSE-13.1 on USB-3.0 memory stick

by , 07-Mar-2014 at 13:32 (oldcpu's meandering thoughts on Computers, GNU/Linux and openSUSE)
The liveKDE 64-bit openSUSE-13.1 works well on a USB-3.0 memory stick with my Toshiba Z930 Ultrabook's USB-3.0 port. In particular this is a 16 GB Sandisk Extreme USB Flash Drive and I have to say I am quite impressed with it.

[Memory stick plugged in to my Toshiba Ultrabook]

I installed the 64-bit .iso file for openSUSE-13.1 on the memory stick, using the application Image Writer, per the instructions ...

  5. Skype-4.0/4.2 on openSUSE-13.1

by , 19-Nov-2013 at 15:46 (oldcpu's meandering thoughts on Computers, GNU/Linux and openSUSE)
Skype may have no sound or corrupted sound for some users on openSUSE-13.1 and this blog re-iterates what has been posted elsewhere in different places.

The method I use for installing skype is per the openSUSE wiki (where at the time of writing this blog entry it had advice labeled for openSUSE-12.3 that nominally should work for openSUSE-13.1).

I had no sound from skype-4.2.0.11 on my Toshiba Satellite Z930 Ultrabook after my openSUSE-13.1 GM installation.
