I'm wondering now if the "libvdpau" will be nVidia driver version specific. ie each time nVidia produce a graphic driver update, will the libvdpau version need updating?

@oldcpu

I think this question is better asked over at NV forums, maybe in the announcement thread (if it's not locked and reply disabled)? AFAIK, if API changes or new features are added, it may force an update of both

Hmm,
Good thing I learned how to install video drivers "the hard way."
It's beginning to look like the 1click for the nvidia drivers will be biting the dust sooner rather than later.
A NOTE TO ALL NEWBIES:
We here at the forums only call the CLI way of installing nvidia drivers the hard way because it's not 1click,that's all.
The CLI or hard way as we call it is really very easy,if a Linux moron like me can do it anyone including cavemen can do it!

I noted the nVidia vdpau plan in a post I made on the Packman mailing list (with libvdpau as the subject). There has been no reply to my mailing list post, and I suspect the Packman Packagers are "on top" of what is happening here.

I posted on the Packman mailing list, and they ARE on top of the libvdpau changes, where yaloki noted they package that shim library, that only contains the headers and the "trace" (non-)implementation (which is consistent with what nVidia are doing).

I note this recent post about mplayer:

I just committed a patch to MPlayer svn that avoids dynamically loading
libvdpau.so.1, but links at compile time against that (open-source) library if
it is installed.

So to compile the next version of pm-mplayer, you need libvdpau (and
libvdpau-nvidia is obsolete, afaict).
